We've Got Pride!

This year's Pride booth was a success!  We got roughly $2300 in total tips from Saturday and Sunday, and we will also be getting 25% of the net proceeds from our booth.  Pride is always one of our biggest fundraiser of the year, and staffing the booths is no mean task! It couldn't have happened without our amazing fundraising chair Sonia who orchestrated our efforts, and all the volunteers, with special shoutouts to the Beverage Queens Cameron and Lexie, assistant booth captains Evan and Phoebe, treasurers Mel and Lisa, and everyone who volunteered for the set up shifts and those who stayed all day to help. You. Rock!
We would also like to thank the Berkeley Men's team for volunteering with us on Saturday, and CPC for sponsoring our flyyy lilac tanks!

Player Profile:
Miranda "Meeko" Luarca

(Photo: Cal Women's Rugby)

Full name: Miranda Luarca
Rugby nickname: Meeko/Meeks/Meekies
Hometown: Long Beach, CA
Position(s): 6, 7, 8 (15s); 4, 1, 6 (7s)
All Blues since: Summer 2016
Meeko is one of several Cal babies who are currently playing in our summer 7s program.  She started playing rugby about two years ago, upon being urged to attend her first Cal practice by a couple of older, close friends who also played in college.  She has since stayed after that for “the beautiful Cal team [she] now [gets] to call family,” as well as rugby being “pretty effing dope.”
Meeko is brand-new to the All Blues but has already stepped up to help out the team.  One of her best team memories thus far was during the time she volunteered at the alumnae brunch for princess hours, and got to know a little bit more about the alum community.  According to her, “lifting a couple things, eating some great bacon, taking a solid nap were all nice bonuses but mostly when everyone finished eating and the brunch was officially over feels like my warmest memory. So many stuck around to recount memories, drop some knowledge, and make plans with each other about the next time they'll meet up.”
As a player, Meeko’s philosophy is “to make someone else's life easier or at least not harder.”  To get in the zone, she thinks about “who [she] will be stepping on the pitch with, what their patterns and preferences are, how much [she appreciates] being with them, and how hard [she wants] to work with them.”  Towards her development as a player, she especially credits three people: Stacey Wong and Jessica Lewis, who were previous teammates, and Lucy Croy, who was a former Cal coach.  “All of them,” she says, “helping me work hard and reminding me to breathe.”

Meeko’s passion outside of rugby still revolves around her desire to be helpful.  She would like to be “thought of as someone who really came through when it was needed.”  She gets a sense of fulfillment from playing rugby, and she hopes to get the same feeling in any future career she dives into.  Spirit animal-wise, she’s been told she’s every mammal under the sun, including a quokka.  But she honestly feels that maybe she’s “some type of baby cub.”
The monthly Player Profile series aims to highlight an All Blue currently playing during each of the 3 seasons. Curious about someone in our community? Let us know who you'd like featured!
