NVHR NEWSLETTER – October, 2014
NVHR Endorses S.2839

NVHR has endorsed S.2839, "The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2014." The bipartisan bill outlines a broad strategy to address the opiod and heroin misuse crisis in our communities. We sent a letter to all Senate Judiciary Committee members expressing our support for the legislation and outlining how it can play a role in stemming new hepatitis C infections. We encourage everyone to call their Senators and ask them to cosponsor this bill.

Advances In Electronic Health Record Use For HCV Screening

Epic Systems, the largest provider of electronic health record software, has developed pre-loaded content to support hepatitis C testing in the 1945-1965 birth cohort in their foundation system. This program uses the Health Maintenance reminders and Population Management tools to identify patients in the birth cohort who have no previous record of having a hepatitis C test or diagnosis and lists them for a chosen intervention such as standing orders for anti-HCV antibody test or patient reminders sent out to MyCharts. Epic has created a podcast for providers about hepatitis C decision support and a powerpoint presentation of interventions in Epic to improve HCV testing. Please contact Tina Broder, Program Manager, for more information.

Medicare Coverage Of Hepatitis B Screenng
NVHR, along with Hep B United, the Hepatitis B Foundation, and other partners, is urging Medicare to cover hepatitis B screening for beneficiaries who are at at risk as defined by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. We will be issuing a formal request that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services undergo a National Coverage Determination process. We will circulate a sign-on letter to include with request. Look for the letter soon and please add your organization's name!
