What's been going on
Congratulations to Cheema's high school graduates, Matthew Audas, Riley Gray, Sloan MacKenzie, and Xavier LeVasseur, as well as long time Cheema paddler Ashley Audas. It may not have been the high school graduation you dreamed of, but we know that won't stand in the way of you achieving your dreams.

Summer Registration
Registration for the summer 2020 season has been closed. Due to the restrictions related to Covid-19, group sizes need to be much smaller, limiting our numbers for this year's programming. Those who have already registered will be contacted over the next 1-2 weeks with more information about whether or not your athletes have been placed in a group, or will be on the waiting list. As the groups are created, if any spaces do open up, an announcement will be posted on Facebook with a link to the registration form.

A special summer edition of the newsletter will be coming out in the next week or so with all of the information you will need to know before the program starts. Please keep an eye on your inbox for this important communication.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we try to navigate these new waters.

Richard Dalton - NS Sport Hall of Fame
Cheema is incredibly pleased and proud to announce that paddler Richard Dalton will be one of the four athletes, one team and two builders to be inducted into the prestigious Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame this year.

Richard, an Olympic paddler and three-time World Championship bronze medalist, will be recognized for his athletic achievements and contributions to sport in Nova Scotia.

Richard made it to the podium at national and international sprint canoe events an impressive number of times. In a career spanning two decades, he won gold at the national senior men’s championships 24 times and placed first on the World Cup circuit 9 times. A competitor at the 2004 Olympics and gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games, he represented Canada at the Senior World Championships nine times, bringing home three bronze medals.

Richard joins long-time friend and Cheema C2 partner, Mike Scarola, as an inductee into the NS Sport Hall of Fame, along with Cheema Coach Frank Garner, athletes Ann Dodge, Don Brien, Karen Furneaux, and Cheema Team ’77. Over the more than 550 athletes, builders and teams inducted in the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, Cheema has far more inductees than all the other Atlantic Division canoe clubs combined. Richard was also inducted into the Cheema Hall of Fame on Cheema’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, 2019. Richard’s coach at the time at Cheema was Laszlo (Csom) Latorovski. WAY TO GO CHEEMA!

Due to the unprecedented circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the Hall of Fame has yet to decide on a firm date for Induction Night. That decision will be made in the coming weeks, as they continue to closely monitor the provincial “re-opening.” To view the complete Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame Press Release: https://www.facebook.com/nsshf/

Sponsor Shout-Out
We have two very amazing and generous sponsors to recognize this month.

Bob Pickrem - RAPCO
A huge thank you, once again, to Bob Pickrem and RAPCO for their continued, never-failing support. Thank you for putting our docks back in so that our athletes were able to get back on the water and return to their training.

Dave Murray - McDonald's Halifax Mainland and Tantallon
Big thank you being sent out to Dave Murray, of McDonald's (Halifax Mainland and Tantallon), for paying to have the dead wood and trees cleared, and the brush removed from the Cheema property. We are so appreciative that the athletes will enjoy a real park-like setting this summer at the club.
Jump Start Program
After being away from Cheema for the off-season, our Jump Start athletes were raring to get back on the water to prepare for the summer paddling program. They quickly got back into the routine and are already showing great progress.
Foundations Program
This is our youngest group of off-season athletes, but their age doesn't stop them from giving it their all. They pushed through the online zoom sessions and were ready when they were given the go-ahead to get back into their boats. They spent their first few practices close to the dock, trying to get their balance back, but are now venturing into the cove, and even up the lake, to work on their paddling skills.
Learn To Train
Our Learn to Train athletes were very excited to be back together after so many weeks of only seeing each other virtually. The best part has been getting back on the water. Since we had such a large group of athletes join this year-round program, they have been divided into smaller groups to keep the numbers within the guidelines and to allow the athletes enough space to be able to keep socially distant. Covid-19 will not stop these young up and comers from reaching their training goals.
PaddleALL Update

Our PaddleALL athletes have been doing on land training over the past 2 weeks and are VERY happy to be back at the club. Even more exciting though, they are getting back on the water this week! Ash, Matt, Logan, and Alex are so happy to be hitting the water again, and, of course, Coach Erin is too! Our year long participants are all really missing Payton, Sam, Logan, Freya, and Xavier, though, and can’t wait until July when they will all be together again. Overall, things have been going SO well and everyone is doing a great job at following the safety and distancing protocols. Everyone is still managing to have tons of fun despite having to stay 6 feet apart!

Development High Performance Program

The Development High Performance Group has powered through the challenges of socially distanced training by showing up for their online sessions and giving it their all. They are now spending their mornings at the club, putting in many, many kilometers, as they build up their fitness and prepare for a very different season than they have ever had before. The continued motivation and dedication that these athletes have shown, without the enticement of races and medals to push them forward, just goes to show how driven they really are. We can't wait to see the amazing things these athletes have in store.

High Performance Program

After Covid-19 put a stop to their training in Florida, our High Performance athletes continued to work hard from their homes via Zoom practices, runs, and other self-directed training routines. Their dedication to this strange new way to train has paid off, and their return to the water has been fantastic. They have been putting in a lot of socially distanced kilometers as they prepare for a season very different from what they are used to. With no regattas on the near horizon, and all major competitions already cancelled or postponed, these athletes have had to shift their focus. We know they are up to the challenge, and when things get to the new normal, they will be ready for it.

Shout-out
This month's shout-out goes to our amazing coaching staff. The hard work they have put into creating a safe and socially distanced program is the only reason we are able to be at the club and on the water right now. We are very appreciative for all that you do on a regular basis, always going above and beyond, but this just takes the cake! You guys are amazing.
