Happy Holidays

It's been quite a year for GreySave. With 12 Homecomings, we brought 125 dogs across the border, and placed 116 in their forever homes! People and hounds celebrated with another successful Race to the Park and the ever-popular Oktoberfest. Our social media presence grew with the addition of a new Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter accounts.

This year wasn't without its struggles, though. We had a whopping 23 dogs come in with broken legs, and many of our GreySave family members had to help their loved ones cross the Bridge. In true GreySave fashion, we banded together and helped the hounds and their people heal.

It is because of your generosity that we are able to continue our work of making sure every greyhound makes it from track to couch. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. We wish you and yours a very Happy Holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you in 2017!

Last Homecoming of 2016!

Our hardworking and dedicated volunteers helped 12 new hounds get ready for their new lives in forever homes. Thank you GreySave Volunteers, Fosters and Adopters!

Lily is a Certified Therapy Dog

Lilly came into Janet Epperson's life on February 3, 2016, and she not only lights up Janet's life, she is adored by residents in local care facilities. For many years Janet has been lighting up the lives of people with her certified therapy dogs, and thought Lily might like to join her on her visits. She enrolled Lily in a basic obedience class, and was so proud when she passed her certification with the national therapy organization, Love on a Leash.

A natural at bringing joy and comfort, Lily aced the AKC Canine Good Citizen test and is now bringing comfort and joy into the lives of patients and staff at local care facilities. Janet says, "Lilly is a perfect companion, happy, playful, friendly, and sweet.  She loves squeaky toys and her daily walks.  She is a great ambassador for Greyhounds and I want to thank GreySave for placing her with me."

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with us, Janet, and thank you, Lily, for being a source of happiness and peace for others.

Each month GreySave will feature one special hound. If you'd like to share how your greyhound has touched your life, please submit a short story (no more than two paragraphs) and a picture of you with your dog to fastdogmom@gmail.com

Lost Greyhound

Marion Jenkins (not her real name) said goodbye to her last guest and flopped down on the couch. "That was a nice party. I think everyone had a good time," she said to her husband who was busing himself with wrapping up leftover food. "Yeah, it really was a good one, and Lorna was so good. It's like she wasn't even here."

Marion's heart skipped a beat as she sat straight up, eyes scanning the room. "Where is Lorna, Bill? I don't see her." Marion began calling frantically and running from room to room, "Lorna! Lorna Doone, where are you?" Bill, trying to remain calm, joined in the search. "Calm down, Marion, I'm sure she's here. She's probably hiding out and sleeping somewhere." But Lorna was no where to be found.

"She must have slipped out when someone left," said Marion, her voice quivering. "Oh, Bill, where is she?" Bill grabbed his keys, "Let's go. She couldn't have gotten far, right?" "Bill, she's a greyhound! She can reach speeds of up to 45 mph in less than a minute," Marion snapped. I'm calling GreySave. They'll know what to do."

Thankfully, Lorna was found and returned to Marion and Bill, a little worse for wear - exhausted, hungry, thirsty and with bloody, shredded paw pads...but alive. Most greyhounds who get out, are not so lucky. With the holidays come parties and lots of people coming in and out, and the risk of of losing your dog(s) forever is high. This season (and always) make sure to take the proper precautions and keep your hound(s) safe. Extra gates, off limit rooms, crates, ex-pens or letting your hound spend the night with a trusted friend, could mean the difference between life and death. Remember, never, ever under any circumstances, let your dog off-leash in an open, unsecured area or use a flexi-lead.

If your dog does get out, follow these steps immediately.

We Need Your Help

With so many tracks closing, the pet kennel in Mexico is filling up faster than we can get bring them across the border. In addition to the sheer numbers of dogs who need to get out, more and more are coming to us with broken legs. Currently, there are 20 dogs with broken legs in our care.  Each dog that comes to us with a break, costs GreySave an average of $5000.00. Simply put, are funds are running dangerously low, and we need your help.

We can’t bear the thought of leaving any behind, and without your support, their fate is grim. Please, help us help these wonderful dogs by making a tax-deductible donation. Whether it’s a one-time gift or you’d like to become a monthly donor, any amount will help save a life just like the one who raced into your heart.

About GreySave

Since 2006 GreySave has been helping greyhounds find loving homes. To date, over a thousand greyhounds have gone from track to couch. Each dog is fully vetted, spayed/neutered, microchipped and placed in a loving foster home until the right family is found for each unique hound.

The mission of GreySave Greyhound Adoptions is to facilitate the adoptions of greyhounds, those whose racing careers have ended, and those who have been abandoned or who are unwanted; to positively impact the welfare of greyhounds; and to educate the public about greyhounds, their appeal as pets, and their care. We want to help bring about a time when no greyhounds are destroyed at the end of their racing careers.
