Electra Mining Africa 2018 came to a close on 14 September, concluding a week-long celebration of the African mining, manufacturing and construction sectors. This year the exhibition held themed days that focused on various aspects of industry. These were: the future of skills development on day one, innovative new products on day two, a celebration of South Africa on day three, safety day on day four and lastly diversity day on day five. This allowed exhibitors to hone in on specific topics and ensured that all exhibitors were able to showcase their specific products and services. It also lent an air of festivity to the already buzzing show, with some stands choosing to decorate per theme day. One of the biggest take aways from this year’s show is that automation and digital transformation are very much on the cards for the African mining industry. Digitalising your operations improves communication, increases productivity and ensures a safer working environment for employees. This was demonstrated by numerous exhibitors in Hall 7’s dedicated automation and digitalisation exhibition but especially so by Schneider Electric which uses its global mining experience to best guide customers through their digital transformation journey. RS Components was another exhibitor who highlighted the importance of the Industrial Internet of Things and showed how you can make it work for your business.

RS Components, an exhibitor at Electra Mining Africa 2018, announced the availability of the new SIMATIC IOT2000 module from Siemans, which is an Arduino-compatible shield that enables additional digital and analogue input/output (I/O) connectivity in an industrial environment. Designed to be compatible with the SIMATIC IOT2020 and IOT2040 industrial IoT gateways, the new module can be connected directly to local sensors to trigger non-time-critical processes.

Agile mining operations integrate data systems

One of the main take aways from this year’s Electra Mining Africa exhibition is that digitalisation and automation is the future of mining globally. Schneider Electric’s global mining experience has lead the company to conclude that the way towards industry transformation is in the creation of mining organisations built around connected agile mining operations
