Dana Johnson by Evie Fordham

Dana Johnson, Class of 2014, at her Letter of Intent Signing
Dana Johnson, a 19-year-old senior, has run cross-country at Wake Christian since her middle school years. Now, Dana has the opportunity to run cross-country at the college level on Louisburg College's team. After she applied to the college, Dana was informed of Louisburg's new cross-country program. The coach was impressed by her times and urged her to consider joining the college's cross-country program.

Dana says that she is very excited about "running my way into a scholarship! I have always wanted to play a sport in college like my dad did. It's a dream come true."

Dana loves cross-country running and "the feeling of a great run, when nothing hurts and you just float along." She says that the most important lesson she learned from her time running at Wake Christian Academy was to "never give up." WCA is excited that Dana will bring the important lessons she learned on the team to Louisburg's cross-country program, and we wish her the very best of luck in the future.

*Editor's Note: On Wednesday, March 5, two WCA athletes signed NCAA letters of intent - Dana Johnson in Cross-Country with NCJCC Division I member Lousburg College, and Beau Barger in Football at Division II member Lenior-Rhyne University. (Read more about Beau Barger here.)

Missions 5K Run/Walk and Family Fun Run

Jon Pope in Kenya
"If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday." Isaiah 58:10

Join us this Saturday, March 22, at 8 am for the Missions 5K Run and Family Fun Run! Click here to register. All proceeds benefit 58ten, a community of Christians acting on behalf of orphans. Started in part by WCA alumni, brothers Ben ('06) and Jon ('05) Pope, 58ten's desire is to connect you with some of these orphans in Kenya. "We want to take you beyond simply sponsoring a child, to sharing ownership of a Gospel-proclaiming orphanage with other followers of Jesus. Being part of bringing about amazing change in the lives of these orphans is not just for 'someday,' but for today."

Ben and Jon, whose mother, Sherry Gardner Pope, taught at WCA (1976-1981 and 1994-2007) came out to speak to our students during Wednesday chapel services in February. They shared pictures of Mulango Children's Home and the 150 children who call this orphanage "home." Currently, one of the orphanage's greatest needs is new ceiling tiles, which is where WCA can help. Your participation in Saturday's race will go directly toward the purchase and installation of these tiles, making this orphanage a better, safer, healthier place for these beautiful children. Click here to watch the 58ten trailer, and pray about the difference your family can make in the lives of these orphans. For questions about WCA's Missions 5KRun/Walk and Family Fun Run, contact Race Director Dawn White. Thank you for your participation in this incredible missions opportunity!

Meet Phil Crane

The Crane Family
Mr. Crane's Favorite Verse is Joshua 24:15. "This verse was used at my Deacon Ordination Service at Tabernacle Baptist Church, in the mid-70s. Russell Capps, WRAL weather forecaster and state legislator, was my mentor and presenter. Russell used this verse in his presentation, indicating my grandfather and father's philosophy of life."

In a recent comment on the school's Facebook page, under a picture of Mr. Phil Crane, someone posted, "Mr. Crane IS Wake Christian Academy!" That statement couldn't be more true, as Mr. Crane is celebrating his 38th year at WCA, and has done just about everything, from teaching to leading the school. He began teaching World History and Bible, and then held the following positions: Athletic Director (1978-1984), Assistant High School Principal (1984-1989), Business Manager (1990-1991), Administrator (1991-2004), and Admissions and Alumni Coordinator (2004-2013). He currently serves as the Alumni Coordinator, and taught High School World History, High School Accounting, Middle and High School English, and Middle School and High School Bible classes all but 10 years while serving as Administrator.

Alumni News

Brandon Burke
Brandon Burke ('11), was selected to become a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, a Leadership Honor Society. In a letter from the Office of Academic Affairs at Claflin University, it stated that Brandon earned this honor because of his academic accomplishment of a 4.0 GPA and his leadership potential. His candidacy for the Society is a nationally-recognized achievement of honorable distinction, because Sigma Alpha Pi is one of the largest college leadership honor societies in the United States. The letter concluded, "We commend you for earning this invitation. Your desire to become a visionary leader and your dedication to outstanding achievement provides you with this selective and distinguished opportunity." Congratulations, Brandon! Your entire WCA family is proud of you!

Please pray for:

  • Annabelle Barbour, daughter of Wilson ('93) and Crystal Barbour, who is recovering from surgery to repair a hole in her heart.
