Cheer Squad Competes

The WCA Competition Cheer Squad

The 2012-2013 Competition Cheer Squad completed their season last weekend at the Christian Cheerleaders of America Nationals Competition, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The squad finished with an impressive third-place win in Large Varsity Music, behind second-place Bishop Ireton, of Alexandria, VA, and first-place Portsmouth Christian Academy, of Portsmouth, VA.  The squad has practiced each week since August, and in the final month before Nationals, they practiced every weekday, averaging more than 10 hours each week.  Head Coach Gayle Barger said, "Being together for seven months can be challenging, and at times, stressful - mentally, emotionally, and physically.  But seeing young ladies grow and mature as individuals and as Christians is exciting!"  Congratulations also go to two seniors on the squad who have been sought out by cheer coaches from Liberty University and Methodist University to attend spring tryouts.  Members of the WCA squad include:  Seniors - Ashley Carroll, Candace Carter, Sarah King, and Katie Spain; Junior - Jessica Russell; Sophomores - Haley Bennett, Josee' Mitchell, Madison Pearce, and Victoria Renfroe; Freshmen - Brenna Barger, Grace Bunn, Brooke Capps, Haley Perry, and Kaitlyn Thompson.  The squad is coached by Gayle Barger and Assistant Coaches Sarah Stallings and Alana Wegner.  Many thanks to the WCA Administration, Coach Johnson, Mrs. Brown, Caitlyn O'Connor, parents, students, and staff for their prayers and encouragement.  Coach Barger continued, "It is a blessing to have this opportunity to represent WCA and to know that everything can glorify the Lord!"

Bulldog Summer Camp

Junior Cheerleaders Perform at a 2012 Varsity Football Game
Cheer Camp, led by WCA's Athletic Assistant, Robynne Brown, runs from 1 pm - 4 pm June 3 - June 5 (first through third grades) and June 10 - June 12 (fourth through sixth grades).  Coach Katie Spain and Coach Hailey French will assist Mrs. Brown with the girls for each session.  Campers will learn chants, cheers, tumbling, stunts, and more at this camp, designed to give girls an introduction to cheerleading.  The Junior Cheerleaders' fun doesn't stop at the end of camp! In the fall, the girls will join the WCA cheer squad for a varsity home football game, and have the opportunity to perform with the WCA Bulldog at half-time!  Campers also ride on their own float in the WCA homecoming parade.  Youth-size cheer uniforms, cheer shirts, and pom-poms will be available to order for any camper who is interested.  To register for Cheer Camp, or to see a listing of other WCA Summer Camp programs, click here!

WCA - A Community That Cares

WCA Families Serve the Homeless Near Downtown Raleigh
When Ryan Jackson, '08, was a junior at WCA, he felt a burden for the homeless, and on three different occasions, he collected backpacks and filled them with necessities, and delivered them to Moore Square, in downtown Raleigh.  In November of 2012, following the Band Festival held at WCA, there was leftover food, so Ryan's mom, Kim Jackson, an assistant in Mrs. Bowers' kindergarten class, remembered Ryan's work and suggested the food be taken to Moore Square.  Since that time, leftover lunches, clothing, coats, handwarmers, gloves, hot chocolate, coffee, crackers, and fresh fruit have been delivered to the homeless.  Monetary donations have provided items that needed to be purchased. Through the power of Facebook, this ministry has grown, and each week several WCA teachers, aids, past employees, students, friends and family members gather, outside of school and on their own time, to create relationships with the people of Raleigh.  Volunteer Terrie Jernigan was quick to point out, "We make no judgments when they come to receive the items we provide.  Some have jobs, some have homes, but all are in need of a friend, a kind word, and something to eat!  The men we are ministering to need to Lord. We are meeting their needs and talking with them about Jesus.  They are so appreciative and respectful.  WE leave there feeling blessed.  They are ministering to us as much as we are ministering to them!"  Thank you for caring for "the least of these."  We know that when we serve others, we are really serving HIM!

Student Earns Eagle Scout Rank

Ethan Britt, '14, in the Prayer Garden at Calvary Baptist Church
WCA Freshman Ethan Britt recently earned the Boy Scouts of America's Eagle Scout Rank, an accomplishment less than five percent of Scouts achieve.  As Troop Guide for Troop 397 in Garner, Ethan has held the positions of Troop Scribe, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Chaplain.  For his Eagle Scout service project, Ethan designed and led the construction of a large stone wall and flagstone walkway in the prayer garden at Calvary Baptist Church, where he is active in the youth group.  The project was completed with more than 250 donated man hours from Ethan, his friends, and troop members.  In addition to earning 40 merit badges, Ethan is working toward his Religious Emblem Medal and Eagle Palms.  Congratulations, Ethan!
