In God We Trust

On Wednesday, October 10, the first-graders presented Amerikids, a patriotic musical about our country's faith in God.

Alumni Spotlight

Each year, WCA posts our graduates' intended colleges, but you may wonder where they end up years later.  We'll use this newsletter to highlight alumni who are working in a specific field, and spend some time catching up with them.  Below is a listing of some former WCA graduates who went on to pursue careers in the science and medical fields.  To read more detailed accounts of their lives after graduation, including education, internships, and corporate moves, visit www.wakechristianacademy.com/alumni.

Teacher Spotlight

Sonya Massengill, English 11 AP, English 12 College Prep, Honors, and AP

Mrs. Massengill has taught at WCA for 15 years.  For five years prior to that, she taught Voice at the University of North Carolina, as well as privately. When asked about her hobbies, Mrs. Massengill solicited the help of her husband, who informed her that hobbies "need to be recent in order to count," so he suggested what he calls her "expensive hobby of collecting graduate degrees and chocolate."  She jokes, "I'm not sure that chocolate is a hobby exactly, but I spend a lot of time with it, so maybe that qualifies."  Mrs. Massengill's husband, Darrell, is a software development manager at SAS Institute.  Her youngest daughter, Katie, is an engineer with Balfour Beatty Construction.  Daughter Mary Beth is a software developer at Toshiba, and her son-in-law, Jacob, is in seminary at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, "in preparation for following his mother-in-law in a lifelong addiction to higher education."  When asked what advice she would offer new teachers, this sweet chocoholic replied, "Develop short-term and long-term plans for building on your strengths and addressing your weaknesses.  We've all got both, and the students in your classroom benefit when you discover who you are as a teacher and stop worrying about being someone you are not."

Student Spotlight

Rusty Martin, Jr. (pictured with his father) Earns Eagle Scout Rank

Rusty, a junior at WCA, has been awarded the Eagle Scout Award, upon completion of his Board of Review.  This award is granted to scouts and venturers after they have completed 21 merit badges, an extensive service project, and several hours of community service, in addition to demonstrating unquestionable moral character.  Through his continued service to God, his country, and other people, Rusty has followed the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.  Starring in the movie "Courageous" and several more in the future, Rusty is delivering on those principles.  As President of Venture Crew 75, he led the crew in several High Adventure and local excursions, with the culmination of his Eagle service project.  He chose to build three movable benches for the American Legion Post 116.  Since the first Eagle Scout Award was awarded in 1912, 2,151,024 boys have earned the nation's top-respected award.  Congratulations, Rusty!
