New CSA regulations for electric stoves

I want to begin this article with some sobering statistics. Cooking accounts for 43% of fires in multi-dwelling units. This includes town homes. Children, seniors and people with limited mobility are the most vulnerable in such circumstances.

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is an organization that sets standards, including for safety, of many consumer products. CSA is composed of representatives from various industries, government and consumer groups.

This is to let you know that CSA has set new regulatory standards for electric coil top stoves to make them safer. This will change the way electric stoves work.

Coil cooktop elements are being re-designed to add a safety device that prevents the temperature of cooking oil from reaching ignition point.

This took effect June 15, 2018. All products built from this point on must comply.

This is the new standard across Canada. Appliance Canada, our Co-op Cost Cutters supplier for appliances, is already carrying the new stoves. This is an industry standard that they must adhere to.

The new coil elements are similar to the previous ones, except that they will pulse when set on high.  When turned to high, they will stay on for 3 to 4 minutes, then cycle on and off when they reach the top temperature.

The new coils will not look very different but will simply act to prevent cooking fires. They will work much like the Safe-T-element or Smart Burner, which do not allow temperatures to reach the ignition point of oil or grease.

This will not affect pricing.

Like Safe-T-element and Smart Burner, it will take a bit longer to boil water or cook a meal. This may take a bit of getting used to at first – but the main goal is to prevent cooking fires.  Other benefits are:

It will reduce cooking related fire claims, number of false fire alarms, prevent food from burning and extend the life of your pots and pans. If you have questions, please contact me!
