Co-op Housing Awards Presented at CHFT’s Fall General Members’ Meeting

Members and friends gathered at Oakham House on October 24 for CHFT’s fall general members’ meeting and Co-op Housing Awards Night. After the business items on the agenda were dealt with co-op achievements were recognized.

Diane Frankling Co-operative Homes was awarded the Achievement of the Year Award for their Nourish program. This program is aimed at easing the food gap for co-op members who are in need but would prefer a less public way getting help.

Nourish is funded through internal and external donations. Donation money is used to purchase gift cards. The co-op is able to distribute $25 PC grocery cards to members by request as needed. Donation money is used to purchase gift cards. Bulk purchasing of cards allows the co-op to get a small discount on the face value of the cards. All member requests are strictly confidential. They are made to two staff via email or voice mail. Once a request is made a card is left in the members’ mailbox. No receipts are required and there is no limit on the number of times a user can use the fund.

Bamburgh Circle Co-op in Scarborough was presented with the Long-term Contribution Award. This award is given to co-ops who are more than 15 years old and have demonstrated good management, community development and a commitment to social justice.

Co-op Cost Cutters: RONA

As Co-op Cost Cutters winds down another year of Cost Cutting, we welcome RONA to the program. For co-op staff who like to go into a store,

RONA offers co-ops another option for building maintenance supplies.
RONA also specializes in all renovation projects, from exterior to interior. They will provide competitive quotes for material and labour – or just materials if a co-op has a preferred contractor. RONA provides quality products and guaranteed assurance that the job will be well done through the RONA warranty.

In kitchen and bathroom renovations – and cuts out the middle man, the contractor. Contractors usually buy materials and mark them up for profit. RONA provides the materials, products and labour in one stop. That includes project management and warranty on work and products.

A Cost Cutters discount is also available to co-op staff and members. RONA will distribute multiple cards to co-ops once they open an account. Co-ops can then distribute or lend out the cards as they like. Staff and members pay for their own purchases, of course.

Other Cost Cutters discounts available to staff and members are with Appliance Canada, Dulux Paints and Sherwin Williams.

If you would like to take advantage of any of these savings, please let me know and I will set it up for you.
