President Hanson challenges students at campus summit on alcohol and safety 

Bemidji State University President Richard A. Hanson challenged nearly 500 students at a Jan. 29 campus-wide gathering to confront the dangers of alcohol abuse, and students shared their ideas for improving safety and promoting responsible behavior.

President addresses campus regarding governor's budget

On Jan. 27, President Hanson issued a message to the faculties and staffs at both BSU and NTC regarding Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton’s recommendations for the state’s FY2016-17 budget. Dayton’s proposal did not include MnSCU's request for $142 million in supplemental funding.

2015 JazzFest begins this week


BSU welcomes Graham Breedlove, trumpeter with Army Blues, and Steve Smith, former drummer for the band Journey, as lead clinicians for JazzFest 2015.The BSU JazzFest is a non-competitive, educationally based festival in which bands perform for about 20 minutes and receive constructive suggestions in a 25-minute session with a pair of camp clinicians. Breedlove and Smith will perform at concerts in Bangsberg Hall on Feb. 6-7.

Nursing expands to Northland

Registered nurses in northwest Minnesota seeking to continue their educations can now pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing from BSU at Northland Community and Technical College’s campus in East Grand Forks.

BSU launches graduate certificate program in camp nursing

BSU students can now pursue one of the nation’s only graduate certificate programs in camp nursing. The online program blends clinical, community health and emergency response skills to prepare nurses for camp practice.

New Talley Gallery open in Bridgeman Hall

After a year-long redesign and construction effort, BSU unveils its new Talley Gallery with an exhibition by local artist Jennifer Nelson. Her show, A Space Between, is open through Feb. 26.

Bemidji Choir CD on sale

The Bemidji Choir's 2013-14 performance CD, "Reaching for the Light," is now on sale at the Department of Music. The CD features 22 tracks recorded during the choir's annual spring concert tour in April 2014. Proceeds from the CD cover production costs. CDs are also sent to high school choir directors throughout Minnesota and to each member of the Minnesota All-State Choir.

CDs can be purchased in Bangsberg Hall or by contacting Dr. P. Brad Logan, professor of music.
BSU's Imagine Tomorrow Campus Campaign resumes in February

The Imagine Tomorrow Campus Campaign is continuing this year. Later this month, the BSU Foundation will reach out to individuals who joined the Lakeside Society last year as well as those who have yet to join the campaign.

Thank you to all faculty and staff who are supporting this five-year effort to raise $35 million for student scholarships and academic excellence. Employee gifts last year totaled more than $125,000. So far, all gifts and commitments to the campaign total $31.5 million.

Anyone interested in joining the Imagine Tomorrow Campus Campaign Committee is encouraged to contact Lisa Hofstad, director of annual giving, at lhofstad@bemidjistate.edu or ext. 2872.

2015 Midwinter Interlude opens Feb. 16

BSU's Sixth Annual Midwinter Interlude, an arts and crafts show featuring work produced by BSU's faculty and staff, will open Feb. 16 in Bangsberg Hall's Ramsey Gallery. Each year, more than a dozen faculty and staff display their work, including photography, stained glass, sculpture, jewelry, quilting, knitting, drawing and painting, fishing tackle, and other arts and crafts.

An opening reception will be held from 3-7 p.m. on March 6 as part of the city's First Friday Art Walk.

Beaver Athletics Update

North Star College Cup champions

Behind a dominant goaltending performance from eventual tournament MVP Michael Bitzer, Bemidji State toppled a pair of Top 10 opponents and captured the North Star College Cup, played Jan. 23-24 in St. Paul. The four-team tournament features Minnesota's Division I hockey programs. In addition to BSU, this year's participants were Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State-Mankato.
