A Year of Change & Progress

This past year has been one of change and progress for The Open Pantry. After six years as our Executive Director (ED), Elizabeth Butz transitioned out of her role in early 2012, and we hired Geoff Bryant as our Interim ED. We then hired Melissa Cariño as our new ED in April who took on additional responsibilities and roles such as communications, fundraising, and community liasion.  We developed a new mission statement.  We joined Lowell's Food Security Coalition and assisted with a community food assessment.  Over the summer, we hired and worked with two youth staff from the Lowell Career Center.  We sent out our first e-Newsletter in July.  In September, we moved to a larger space within the same building, with a new entrance at 13 Hurd Street, which is just around the corner from our previous entrance at 200 Central Street.  Our new mailing address is: 13 Hurd Street, PO Box 7258, Lowell, MA 01852.  The Open Pantry is now online and engaged on social media.

Yes, we had many changes in 2012, but all focus on and contribute to our organization's progress to sustain its vital services well into the future.  And our services are indeed still needed!  We currently serve over 1,700 individuals each month, and we distributed over 450 Thanksgiving meal packages to our constituents in November.  We are seeing new clients visit The Open Pantry every day, many of whom are new immigrants and refugees.

"We are definitely moving forward.  We upgraded our space and increased our clientele.  We're making things more convenient with two entrances for clients & providing more food - especially fish and proteins - to everyone."  - Ellen Layton, Darlene Goodwin, and Roberto Pagan who are all volunteers and clients of The Open Pantry

Please consider making a donation to The Open Pantry before the year is over so we can make even more progress in 2013 and years to come.  We wish all of you and your loved ones a happy holiday season & new year!

Fresh Organic Produce

Special thanks to our amazing donors from the Central Congregational Church in Chelmsford! They spent many months preparing, planting, growing, and harvesting fresh organic produce at their community garden plot.

All produce harvested was delivered to The Open Pantry for us to distribute to our constituents.  Some produce included various types of kale, basil, squash, tomatoes, swiss chard, radishes, and beans.  We hope to continue this 4-year partnership well into the future, and we invite additional volunteers to get involved.

If interested, please email us or call us at (978) 453-6693.

Our New Location!

Visit 13 Hurd Street, First Floor, Lowell, MA 01852.
After 20+ years in our space at 200 Central Street, we decided we needed a larger space to provide smoother operations, increase our ability to stock more food, and allow us to use central air-conditioning in the hot summer months. We moved to 13 Hurd Street in September, and while our food pantry operations are running smoothly, we are still settling in.  We welcome resources and donations to help us make this new space our new home that is comfortable and welcoming for constituents, volunteers, staff, donors, and the Greater Lowell community.  Please note we still have an accessible entrance at 200 Central Street, and our new mailing address is PO Box 7258, Lowell, MA 01852.

Our two-person Cycling Team, made up of James Byrum and Melissa Cariño, rode almost 15 miles and helped raise over $1,000 for The Open Pantry.

The Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF) organized its first annual RiverRide Bike-a-Thon on September 22, 2012, and we think it was a big success.  We plan to continue participating in upcoming years and are looking to add cyclers to our team as well as sponsors supporting the team.

If interested in becoming either (or both!), please email us or call us at (978) 453-6693.  And thanks to GLCF for awarding us with a LeClair Elderly capacity grant of $4,250, which will provide over 1,000 meals to the elderly!
