April 23rd, 2021

As we've navigated complexities since the arrival of the pandemic, the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and us have made it our mission to help our business community persevere. More than one year later, we're still working through changes to protocols and critical workplace health practices, and assessing evolving emergency relief funds.
Through support from Western Economic Diversification Canada's Regional Relief & Recovery Fund (RRRF), the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce is delivering to more than 45,000 Manitoba SMEs a brand-new COVID-19 resource guide, "Business is Unusual: A Coronavirus Survival Guide for Manitoba Business"
They have also launched an e-newsletter and a robust companion platform, Manitoba Business Matters, to guide Manitoba organizations through the next phase of pandemic recovery. As the MB Chamber transitions thier COVID-19 content to these new tools, they are also involving expertise from eight pillar organizations in Manitoba. The partners will provide us with ongoing content, special segments, and opportunities for our members to learn as we continue to mount our fight against COVID-19.

We could always be better at planning out our days or weeks and how to know what's important for us to focus on and when. We'll be joined by a couple of amazing and talented business advisors Jeff and Cathy from Siere in Brandon for a walkthrough on better Strategic Planning. We'll be covering things like...
• Why is strategic planning an important part of building a business?
• What are some of the best tools to do it?
• What are the steps in doing a strategic plan?
• What are some of the pitfalls to avoid?

April 22nd, 1903 was the day that the Dauphin Board of Trade was registered federally. One of the oldest Chambers in Manitoba, we have stood the test of time with no signs of slowing down. Fast forward to today as we all know the organization as the Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce, we're servicing a much larger region and 285 members.

To celebrate the big day, the afternoon was spent visiting a few partner locations and members that are being recognized this year with milestone achievement awards. The milestone awards we would have presented as a big lunch event in March but due to COVID we had to change the delivery model. Since it was a "birthday" there had to be gifts. But not for us, for our members and partners. Along with some of the awards, we also delivered gift cards to various businesses in the region (more stops will be made in the near future).

You may recall that since November 2020, we have been purchasing gift cards from businesses in the area that were heavily impacted by COVID. Thanks to our funding and partners City of Dauphin and Dauphin & District Community Foundation, we were able to purchase over $25,000 in gift cards which we are now starting to unload into the community. These initial purchases helped to inject a little money to some of the businesses that could use the help. The hope is that when the cards get used, they are used to purchase more from the business than what the face value of the cards are. This multiplies the investment we initially were able to make.

Why Local? Why not?

The Parkland region is our home. We have amazing natural features, great people and such a depth of what it means to be a community. As individuals and as a collective, we need to choose local more than ever. Where we can, making the conscious effort to try a local merchant first as opposed to seeing our local dollars disappear to mega-corporate online stores. But it's not always about retail either. Try and source a service provider a little closer to home as well. The more we can support our local businesses the more they can support the community with jobs, taxes, influence, more businesses, donations and more. It's all about being Stronger Together and Supporting the Parkalnd.

More inspirational stories are pumping out! Grab an April 13th Dauphin Herald or April 16th Parkland Shopper for the next round of stories! We've launched a new campaign that will feature inspiring stories of some Chamber Members from across the region. These businesses took on the challenge of the pandemic and made a pivot in order to continue serving the community.

“And coming out of this, I think I've made so many better relationships with different business owners in town over the past year, just because you're empathetic, you're sympathetic. You just feel for everybody and you want to reach out and have that conversation, let them know they're not alone,” Nathan - Parkland Fitness Club

Watch for them each week in the Dauphin Herald and Parkland Shopper! Full stories will be shared on our website.
