Human Habitats, opportunities, Literary Salon, meet Andi Snelling, theatre giveaway

Human Habitats success

After a bit of a stressful run-up, our Melbourne Knowledge Week event, Human Habitats: High Density was a very satisfying success.

Many thanks again to our MC, the presenters, volunteers,  and the our venue partner, the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre for doing such wonderful jobs and making it a great night.

We will be podcasting the evening's presentations and hosting a follow-up event for all those who couldn't fit in the room. Stay tuned.

Lit Salon next week

Meet Andi Snelling

If you have been to a Scribble Creative event, odds are you have seen Andi Snelling in action, keeping everyone entertained and on track as our MC.

We had a chat to Andi about her show #DearDiary, which is back at the Butterfly Club for an encore season as of next week, as well as her work with us, and the new show she's working on right now.

1. What sparked the idea for #DearDiary?
I have been keeping a diary since 1992. I never thought anything of it until I moved back to Melbourne after a seven-year stint in Europe and discovered an old box full of my diaries. I started asking myself, “Why do I keep a diary if I never read it?” So I sat down and read my entire collection from age nine to now, cover-to-cover.

Literally, upon reading the first page of my first sticker-covered diary, I thought to myself, “This is a show.” And then I was crazy enough to actually follow through! The result is deeply existential comedy gold and although very personal, is entirely universal.

2. How do you prepare for an MC gig like the ones you do with Scribble?
I do a lot of googling. I sniff around, looking for unusual insights into the companies or speakers who I am MCing for. I write up cue cards, the old-fashioned, hand-written way, with strange prompts for myself which no one else would possibly understand, such as “joke about over-grown flowers.” I tend to be an over-preparer, but it’s what allows me to improvise so much on the night, which is what I enjoy the most about MCing.

3. What can you tell us about what you're working on at the moment?
I am currently devising my next solo show, which will explore the subliminal ways in which the world delivers knowledge to us, such as déjà vu and dreams. Last year, I had the strange feeling I was going to have a bike accident an hour before I actually did, so I’m curious about what we choose to do with this knowledge once we have it, if we even recognise it at all. It’ll be a dark, mysterious show, which harks back to my dancing roots. Look out for it in September!

#DearDiary is back at the Butterfly Club, opening next Wednesday 1 June.
