Jane Mason’s work explores ways in which the movements of bodies and objects in space can create ‘image worlds’ of great affective resonance and tenderness.

The initial trigger for Life Forces came from her father’s old slide projector and his archive of slides.

Joined by writer/performer Phil Smith, Life Forces offers a meditation on memory’s place in the face of uncertain futures, and on transformation and change as the core ground of being, the ‘life force’ that links everything and everyone.

Life Forces
is a duet performed by choreographer Jane Mason and performer/writer Phil Smith; and created in collaboration with Phil Smith, dramaturg David Williams, sculptor Sophia Clist and animator Magali Charrier.

The initial trigger for the direction of Life Forces came from Jane Mason’s father’s old slide projector and his archive of slides. She was also interested in exploring light, change, and the cycle of things being built and falling down. The research process over several residencies in 2013 and continuing into 2014, enhanced these initial starting points, with collaboration at the centre of how the work has evolved.

This workshop will introduce participants to some of our materials, opening up how we are continuously developing these materials to generate new responses between choreography, writing, interaction with objects and images and building towards new juxtapositions between our different elements.  We will share ways of working, open out our process and explore different possibilities together, working to understand what it is we’re drawn to and why

This workshop is a way to keep our process of ongoing research active with people also interested in research based practice.

The workshop is particularly geared to dance/theatre professionals and arts practitioners, and to anyone interested in collaborative performance making.
