Giving Thanks

Lynn MacKenzie - Director

The holiday season is upon us and winter has begun. A change in season means different things to different people. The holidays can be a joyous celebration for some, and a painful reminder for others. In either case, It's always good to remember the good things and be thankful no matter what the holidays mean to you. For those who warmly welcome the holidays, make sure to pause in the hustle and bustle to remember what is truly important. Soon, Thanksgiving will be upon us, and it is especially helpful for those who struggle with the holidays to take a short moment and just reflect on the good things. And remember, that just like the seasons in nature, the seasons in our lives change. As season after season pass by, we continue to move forward, embrace the changes, and be thankful in every circumstance. Though life can be difficult, there is always something good to cling to.

The holidays are often a time when family and friends come together and these moments can be an excellent opportunity to share with those you love the importance of health care directives and advance care planning. Opening up with the topic takes courage and can be challenging. There is a great article that provides some tips to help make it a bit easier.

Also, just as the seasons change outside our windows, Light the Legacy changes as well. We have been working hard to reach our next season and gain official non-profit status. I don't know about you, but I find all those outside duties one must do before the snow hits can be exhausting. From raking leaves to packing lawn furniture away, It's often a great deal of work and effort. The same is true for Light the Legacy. It has been a lot of hard work from a lot of dedicated individuals like yourselves, but it has been so rewarding. We are so close to the finish line and appreciate each and every one of you joining with us in our mission to spread the message of advance care planning to everyone in Central Minnesota.
I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope you are all warm, well, and joyful!

"Herb the Turkey" - Having the Conversation

Honoring Choices Minnesota has started their Thanksgiving campaign. Herb is the star of a new Facebook photo album and has been featured on a poster! Honoring Choices are using Herb to invite and remind people to take advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday and have 'the conversation'. For more about Herb, you can check out Honoring Choices Facebook Page. Also, you can get your very own Herb poster! Feel free to post it up wherever you have a good spot, at work or at your place of worship perhaps, and take a selfie with Herb. Honoring Choices would love to add the photos to Herb's album and spread their Thanksgiving message.

And though that is all in good fun, having the conversation with your loved ones is no laughing matter. Honoring Choices has teamed up with Twin Cities Public Television, who will be showing the documentary "Giving Thanks". This film highlights the sharing of conversations at thanksgiving. Also, Light the Legacy is collaborating closely with Honoring Choices and with them stress that we are encouraging everyone to embrace this opportunity and have the conversation with those you love!

Upcoming Events - Please Join Us!
We wanted to make sure you were all aware of some upcoming events that are a part of our goal to reach as many people as possible with the message of advance care planning. On November 17th, we are having a Health Care Directive Information Session. The event will be held in the Windfeldt Room at the CentraCare Health Plaza and runs from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. These sessions are a phenomenal way to meet with Advance Care Planning Facilitators to learn more, find answers to your specific questions, and even complete and notarize your own health care directive! We urge you to join us!

To make things as easy as possible, you can download and begin working on your own health care directive before the event. We recommend completing the long form
, which is a more comprehensive plan. However there is also a short form that works well for some groups who choose not to complete the long form. Both forms are available on our website. Honoring Choices has prepared a guide explaining the short form you can check out as well.

Our next Light the Legacy committee meeting will be held on December 3rd in the Array Room of the St. Cloud Library. All are welcome to attend.

Advance Care Facilitator Classes
Also coming up is our Advance Care Facilitators Training on November 18th.  This marks the 12th ACP Facilitator class Light the Legacy has held and we look forward to certifying 15 new ACP Facilitators in central MN. This training is a phenomenal way to make an impact in the lives of other Central Minnesota families. By attending our training, you are able to partner with Light The Legacy to promote informed decision-making and positively impact end-of-life care. Mark you calendars and plan now for one of the three classes coming up in the first quarter of 2015. The classes will be held on January 27th, March 17th, and April 28th. More details on those events will be coming soon. Also, you can always visit our training and events page to see all that Light the Legacy offers.
For any weather related changes visit WJON, or check our website.

Thank you! I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and hope that you are blessed throughout this holiday season. Take care!

That's it for now!  Remember to mark those calendars and don't forget to be thankful. Stay safe and warm!

Our Best to you and yours!

Lynn MacKenzie
