Make A Difference This Thanksgiving!

Lynn Mackenzie - Light the LegacyHello, friends! It's Thanksgiving season! Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our many blessings, loved ones, and friends. It's also an opportunity for families to gather and spend time together. As we move into the season of thanksgiving, and even "giving" with December right around the corner, let us take this opportunity to give an even greater gift to our family. Let us give the gift of sharing our health care wishes. Basic healthcare planning covers a great deal more than you may think. The Health Care Directive covers three crucial areas:

1. Who would make medical decisions for you in the event you can no longer speak for yourself.
2. What medical care would you want if you had a severe brain injury? What if you were unlikely to recover your ability to know who you are or who you were with (ie. stroke, car accident, etc)?
3. What religious, cultural or personal values may influence your decision making?

It's a lot to think about, but Light the Legacy is here to help you process all these things, and have the conversations that make an amazing difference. We're here to encourage you to take action, put your wishes in writing and have those conversations with loved ones to communicate those wishes. I want to take a moment to highlight a couple upcoming opportunities to help. I'd also like to draw your attention to the final Advance Care Planning Facilitator Class opportunity in 2015. This class is fast approaching on December 1st, and it will help you in your profession and personal life. These classes are the best way to be that Torchbearer in your own circles. Information about these events and classes are found below.

Finally, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to all our phenomenal volunteers. Light the Legacy is blessed to have a solid Board of Directors, caring committee members, passionate Advance Care Planning Facilitators, and numerous committed volunteers and community members. I wish you a wonderful thanksgiving season filled with joy and love. Thank you for all you do!

Making A Difference

About An Impactful Community Event

Earlier this week, while representing Light the Legacy, I partnered with Sarah Schmidt and Greg Wenner from Foley Funeral Home. Together, we held an event at St. John's Catholic Church in Foley, MN to discuss end-of-life care, advance care planning, and funeral planning. We were invited in by Joyce Simmons, a Faith Community Nurse at he church, who has taken the ACP Facilitator training through Light the Legacy. Many community members came from the Foley area, and wonderful education and conversations occurred during the evening's session on planning for our future. Whether the discussion moved towards our lives, health care choices, or our death, it was a very valuable evening. It is truly a joy for me to see one of our certified Advance Care Planning Facilitators, who took advantage of the ACP Facilitator training through Light the Legacy, and is now out making a difference in their own communities. Individuals who are making a difference in the lives of others, being that Torchbearer. Of those in attendance, only one had already completed their Health Care Directive. After the evening's session, those remaining committed to completing their own Health Care Directive, and have the conversation about their wishes with their loved ones and friends. Thank you, Joyce for giving back to the community you live in and making this opportunity possible.
