Dr. Gamble to Retire

Thomas J. Gamble, Ph.D., president of Mercyhurst University, announced his retirement to the Mercyhurst community last month. His time as our 11th president will come to an end around May 31, 2015 but he will remain a part of the Mercyhurst community to pursue other academic interests.
We thank Dr. Gamble for his great service to Mercyhurst! A national search for the university's 12th president has begun and is being led by Joseph G. NeCastro `78 and Richard A. Lanzillo `83 who are both alumni and trustees. Learn more and read the full press release here.

Mercyhurst vs. Ohio State

The Mercyhurst men's hockey team will play Ohio State at the Erie Insurance Arena on Jan. 2 and 3, hosted by Mercyhurst as the "Snowtown Throwdown"! The Erie Insurance Arena went through a recent $42 million expansion and renovation project. Coach Gotkin stated "It should be, and we are confident that it will be, a great event for not just Mercyhurst University and for our men's hockey program, but for the entire Erie community."

Senior Class Gift

On Nov. 6, members of the Senior Class Gift Committee presented proposal ideas to the administration. The committee presented two excellent gift ideas and one was chosen. The committee will now move forward to plan events and fundraisers to reach their goal of $8,500 and 70 percent participation from the Class of 2015.
Visit their web page at to view their video to find out what the gift will be and to learn more about the committee and their fundraising plans.

Career Development Center

Fall term has been busy in the CDC. Our first annual Hospitality & Intelligence Career Palooza was a resounding success! The Career Palooza was held Nov. 5. This specialized mini job and internship fair brought 19 Hospitality and Intelligence recruiters to campus seeking interns and candidates for full time jobs. The Palooza was followed by several days of intensive interviews for students in both majors.
Holiday season is almost upon us and students will be heading home. The CDC would like to enlist your help in getting your sons/daughters to use this time wisely to prepare for a busy spring term. Encourage them to update their resumes or develop one if they don’t already have one.

Christ the King Chapel to Undergo Restorations

If you visit campus on a weekend this winter into early spring you will notice that our chapel is closed off for restorations (primarily for cosmetic issues like painting and lighting). We will continue to offer Sunday Mass at 11am every weekend and 8:30 p.m. when school is in session, but these will be moved to Taylor Little Theater. Daily Masses will move to Prince of Peace Chapel (2nd floor Student Union). Restorations will begin Jan. 1 with anticipated completion in mid to late March. Thank you for your patience as we preserve and enhance one of Mercyhurst's most important spaces!

Internship Opportunities

Research shows that directed conversation between parents and their children is much more effective than open ended enquiries such as “what did you do today.” Many opportunities will present themselves over the holiday break to have heart to heart discussions with your child about fall semester and the future. A helpful question to ask your child is “have you thought about completing an internship before you graduate?”  Mercyhurst University prides itself on the practical application of knowledge because we know it has many benefits. The annual survey of our most recent graduating class(s) continually indicates that students who complete an internship experience are, on average, more satisfied with their first placement after graduation. More tangibly, they are receiving more job offers and higher starting salaries than their counterparts who did not complete an internship experience.  While you enjoy the holidays and the time with your child, don’t hesitate to discuss this important aspect of their education. If your child wants to pursue an internship, have them contact Dr. Kyle Foust at ext. 2171 in Egan 213.
