Research report: Amino acid digestibility in soybean meal produced in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, India, or China

Soybean meal is the premier source of high quality plant protein for pig diets. However, the nutritional value of soybean meal can vary among sources due to genetic differences among soybean varieties or differences in climate, soil type, fertilizer application, or processing conditions. It is important that these variations be documented so that producers can accurately formulate diets. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to determine if standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein and amino acids varied among sources of soybean meal from the U.S., Brazil, Argentina, India, or China.

Podcast: Effect of α-galactosidase on the energy value of SBM and growth performance of weanling pigs

Charmaine Espinosa, a Ph. D. student in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition lab, presents her investigations into the use of α-galactosidase to improve energy digestibility in soybean meal fed to weanling pigs. These experiments were part of Charmaine's Master's degree work at the University of the Phillipines Los Baños.

Press release: New soy protein concentrate can be used in weanling pig diets

URBANA, Ill. – A new source of soy protein concentrate can be used in diets fed to weanling pigs without negatively affecting digestibility of energy or nutrients, according to research conducted at the University of Illinois.

“Soy protein concentrate is typically produced by using an alcohol extraction process to remove soluble carbohydrates from soybean meal," says Hans H Stein, professor of animal sciences at the University of Illinois. "However, a new soy protein concentrate has been developed which combines a non-alcohol extraction process with enzymatic treatment of soybean meal."
