In case you were wondering,
here's what we do
It can be incredibly frustrating when the creative impulse strikes, but you can’t follow through on your great idea due to a lack of resources or opportunities. This is particularly true when it comes to broadcasting. The barriers to entry can be formidable, and, as a result, many creative, talented people never get the chance to realize their unique visions.
The mission of Houston MediaSource is to give all citizens access to the mass media. For more than a quarter century, Houston MediaSource has provided Houstonians with the resources they need to produce and broadcast their own television – and now radio - programs.
Houston MediaSource is a nonprofit organization that operates the public access cable television channel (HMS TV) and online radio station (HMS Net Radio) in Houston. Since 1987, Houstonians from all walks of life have been submitting their own programming which then airs on all of the cable systems serving the city and also streams online.
I like to tell prospective producers that all they need when they walk in the door is an idea. HMS can provide classes to teach them how to use cameras, lights, and editing software. And once they are certified on all of this equipment, HMS gives producers access to all of the gear that they need to create programming which will air on the channel.
I invite you to take the first step toward becoming a producer at one of our free orientation sessions, held Mondays at 6 p.m. In orientation you’ll learn more about the services that Houston MediaSource offers the community, and you’ll also get a tour of our facilities.
Once you become an HMS producer, you’ll be off and running, limited only by your creativity and your imagination. Let’s see what you can do!
