Message from Equipment Manager

After 15 years of serving in various capacities at HMS, it is my pleasure to continue my work in the role of Equipment Manager. We have some exciting things lined up for our producers, including the addition of an Adobe Premiere class,  and a producer mixer is also in the works. More information will be available soon.

As we continue to provide you with the tools and resources that you need to create your programming, we want to remind you of some policies that are in place with the end goal of providing everyone equitable access to gear and the HMS facilities.
  • Equipment is available for checkout a maximum of six (6) times per month.
  • Each checkout period has a 48-hour limit (unless a checkout is made on Friday or Saturday, in which case, Sunday is granted as an additional day due to our office hours).
  • Equipment and facility reservations can be made one at a time. Multiple reservations cannot be made at once. This helps ensure that the gear and facilities remain available for all producers.
The complete list of policies can be found in the information packet that you received in orientation. Additional copies are available at the equipment desk.

I have gotten to know many of our producers throughout the years, and I look forward to meeting everyone soon.

Pearls of Wisdom
and Perils of Production
by Ariana de Valdivia

Like many HMS producers, my production journey started with lots of ideas on what I wanted to do and I jumped right into the process. I quickly learned that a great idea can easily become a production nightmare. Here are a few tips for avoiding production faux pas.

  • Have a well thought out concept. Draw a basic timeline (60 minutes, 30 minutes, etc.) and position segments, breaks, or other transitions. This will help you organize your production.
  • Obtain plenty of B-Roll (this is video, audio, or still images that complement your program). Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
  • The devil is in the details - research your guests/subject, conduct site visits, and scout for backup locations. Knowing in advance how your on-air talent will look on the day of the shoot (makeup, wardrobe, hair, skin tone, etc.) can help you prepare the best lighting on the set. All of these more
