SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT
ONE VCR AT A TIME

Thank you for E-Cycling

More than 4,200 pounds of electronic items were responsibly recycled in Houston's East End during a free e-cycle event hosted by Houston MediaSource and CompuCycle in March. Thanks to the participation of community members we are one step closer to a cleaner environment. Check it out, we even received a Certificate of Recycling!

SWEET SUITE

Next time you’re at HMS, swing by the Editing Suite and check out the brand new layout. To better accommodate our community producers, we’ve installed new cubicles, which offer a spacious working area and new privacy features. We hope the new digs fuel your editing engines.
GET TO KNOW KAREN & MARK

Many of you have already met the newest additions to the HMS team, Mark Rodriguez and Karen Perez. But did you know that her media production experience includes being a news broadcast technician and graphic artist? She is also a proud Coog who celebrated on the field with the U of H football team during their recent bowl championship? Did you know that in addition to being a filmmaker and documentarian, Mark is a B-Boy and a Star Wars enthusiast who collects memorabilia and action figures? So next time you're at HMS you could ask Karen to sing the U of H spirit song or have Mark teach you the moonwalk!

TRICKS OF THE TRADE
Social Media Tips
by Ariana de Valdivia

One of the best ways to draw more viewers to your programs on HMS-TV and HMS Net Radio is through social media. Here are some simple yet powerful ways to promote your show.
  • New to social media? Don’t fret. Explore the various platforms and select the one that best fits you. The most common are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The more advanced folks should checkout Meerkat, a video streaming app that lets you to Tweet LIVE video straight from your phone!
  • Do these four things before you start promoting your social media sites:
  1. Upload several photos which best represent you and your mission.
  2. Follow as many like-minded people and organizations as possible.
  3. Publish a couple of posts so that you can build an activity/history log.
  4. Like. Share. Retweet. The key to gaining followers is to like, share, and retweet them.
  • NEW! HMS will be hosting a Social Media 101 workshop on Wednesday, May 20th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you have active producer status at HMS-TV or HMS Net Radio and wish to attend, please e-mail info@hmstv.org. RSVP is available on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Follow @HouMediaSource on Twitter, @Houston_MediaSource on Instagram, and like @Houston MediaSource on Facebook. We love to share the work of our community producers, so give us a thumbs up and we’ll show you some love!
