Peter's Message

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

A highlight of my last week was spending time with many of you in the Hall after the Sunday morning service. Someone told me that there had been five people gather for coffee the previous week - whereas last Sunday there were twenty-six of us! It was such a joy to see so many of us having a good time together.

It is also so encouraging to see how much is going on in the life of our church at the moment. This week's eNews is positively brimming with things for people of all ages, gifts, and interests to get involved in - so please have a good read of everything below. And perhaps even give something new a try!

I hope you are enjoying a good start to the weekend, and I hope to see many of you on Sunday.

WYFC 4 Weeks of Prayer

A new Alpha Course started on Monday 16 January in Longwick Village Hall and will run for 10 weeks from 7.30pm to 9pm each Monday (except 13th Feb) until 27th March. All are welcome to join, even if you missed the first session.

The evening begins with refreshments and a video, before an open discussion on the theme for the evening. A chance to explore faith and ask questions in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

If you are interested in joining please contact Sue Hughes.

Alpha Course starting soon

Last year, some of us attended a course at St Dunstan’s called Living in Love and Faith, which was a chance to consider how God is calling His people to live and respond to issues around gender, sexuality, and relationships.  This course was offered across the nation, and the feedback gathered from it has informed our pastors, the Bishops of the Church of England, in their considerations regarding how God is calling His Church to respond to this pastoral aspect of our common life.

The Bishops announced proposals to offer prayers for God's blessing over same-sex couples celebrating their civil marriage or partnership.

The General Synod of the Church of England (made up of Bishops, clergy, and laity) will consider whether to adopt these proposals in February.

So what is the House of Bishops recommending to General Synod?

  • For the first time same-sex couples will be able to come to church to give thanks for their civil marriage or civil partnership and receive prayers asking for God’s blessing on their union.
  • Same-sex couples are still not able to get married in the Church of England, but could have a service with prayers asking for God’s blessing on the couple, following civil partnership or civil marriage.
  • All congregations are urged to welcome same-sex couples “unreservedly and joyfully.”

The bishops have also issued an apology to LGBTQIA+ people for the rejection, exclusion and hostility they have faced in churches.
This is a significant change from where we are in the Church at the moment, as it would represent a pastoral move so that same-sex marriages and civil partnerships can receive God’s blessing.

For some, the proposals are more than they wanted. For others, they are not nearly enough.

In the meantime, if you would find it helpful to speak with our clergy to help you reflect on these issues, then please do not hesitate to contact Peter or Sally.
Join us for coffee after the service
Join us in the Church Hall after services to enjoy some fellowship over tea, coffee and a biscuit or two. It's a lovely way to enjoy each other's company in a warm space before heading home.

Prayers and reflections

Please pray for...

  • The people of Ukraine - we pray for peace, for an end to the conflict, and for safety for the Ukrainian people.
  • Those affected by the lack of freedoms in Iran, and for women and girls facing restrictions in Afghanistan.
  • Those struggling with the cost of living crisis and facing a winter of spiralling energy bills and food costs. We pray especially for all those coping with this cold weather.
  • For all those affected by strikes taking place at the moment.
  • The NHS, that it might have the resources to continue to provide care and treatment for all.
  • Those fighting for justice, working for peace, praying for community, and protecting the vulnerable.
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time, and those who grieve them.
Don't forget that Canon Rob's reflections can be found on the church website by clicking the button below. Reflections will be available on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month.
