Dear Cycling Campaign Supporter,

March was a very busy month for the cycling campaign, with over 200 cyclists taking part in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and last Sunday a group of 500+ cycling along the proposed Liffey Cycle Route to highlight the importance of segregated routes such as this. We also attended the launch last Friday of the very welcome extension to the 30 km/h zone in Dublin City to the Grand Canal and Royal Canal.

We were shocked and saddened by the deaths of four cyclists in collisions on Irish roads during March, of which three happened in Dublin. Our deepest sympathy goes to the families and friends of those who died.

With the growing numbers of cyclists in Dublin it is more important than ever for us to campaign for safe cycle routes, lower speed limits and better driving standards. Our monthly public meeting on the 10th April will be devoted to the topic of 30 km/h speed limits and how they can make cities safer, cleaner and more pleasant for everyone. We will also hear about the upcoming European Cycling Challenge in May and how we can sign up to take part.

Dubliners Demand a Safe Liffey Cycle Route!

Dublin city centre came alive with the sound of bells and whistles on Sunday morning 2nd April as hundreds of cyclists took to the Liffey Quays calling for safer cycle infrastructure along that route. Organised by Dublin Cycling Campaign, the event attracted over 500 cyclists of all ages and abilities riding their bikes from the Phoenix Park to the Point Village in the Docklands.

Cycling has been in the news for the wrong reasons recently with five cyclists losing their lives on Irish roads in the first three months of 2017. A further ten cyclists died in 2016. These utterly needless fatalities have highlighted the urgent need for proper, safe cycle infrastructure in our cities, towns and villages – and on routes between built-up areas.

The Liffey Cycle Route is just one of several key routes that the Cycling Campaign is pushing for Dublin City Council to complete. Read more...

Support the Minimum Passing Distance Legislation!

Have you been frightened by a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre while cycling? If so you are not alone as these overly close passes on Irish roads show.

Deputy Ciaran Cannon has introduced a private member's bill to make a minimum passing distance mandatory. We urgently need you to spend 5-10 minutes to write to or email your local TD explaining why you think this bill is so important and needs enacting.

New Phoenix Park Cycle Path

The new cycle path beside the Wellington Monument is almost ready. All that is left is to add cycle logos and finish the painted line down the middle of the green cycle path. The path is bordered by nice cobbles. The road itself is one way heading west to the Wellington Gate and the cycle lane is bi-directional. Currently there are bollards to prevent cars parking there as it previously was very unsafe for cyclists. Velo-city 2019, here we come!

A busy bicycle themed week ended with the signing of the contracts for Dublin hosting the gigantic Velo-city bicycle conference in 2019. The weather gods again shined on Dublin on Thursday morning as a broad collective of bikes and their owners assembled on the plinth of Dublin’s Mansion House for the photo-shoot. On the plinth no less, the lowly bicycle had come a long way and basked in the glory of its new found exalted company.

Have Your Say on Traffic Changes on the North and South Quays

Next Monday 10th April is the final day for making a consultation on the proposals to close Eden Quay to private traffic, and ancillary proposals to improve public bus transport along the quays and on accesses to the quays. We urge all supporters of improved cycling facilities and better public transport in Dublin City to make your voice heard by making a submission via the Dublin City Consultation Page

Love 30 km/h within the canals!

The Love 30 Campaign is proud to have achieved one of its aims when 30 km/h speed limits were introduced on almost all streets between the Grand Canal and Royal Canal in Dublin on 1 April. We celebrated at the Liffey Cycle on Sunday 2nd April by flying flags on our bikes welcoming 30 km/h to Dublin. We look forward to 30 km/h being introduced over the next few months in all residential estates in South Dublin, in the first phase of residential estates in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and in Crumlin, Kimmage, Sandymount, Donnycarney, Phibsborough and parts of Glasnevin, as part of Phase 2 in Dublin City. St Patrick's Day Parade

Celebrating the 200 year birthday of the bicycle, Dublin Cycling Campaign made an awesome showing at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade! It was our biggest entry yet with over 200 participants (one for every year of the history of the bike!) including two original draisienne bikes ferried over by the Dorset-based Dandy Chargers group.
