Goodness, I don’t even know where to start! This feels like a bad April fools’ joke that has lasted more than a month!  Since the last newsletter, the State has shut down non-essential businesses, everyone is wearing a mask or at least should be wearing a mask, so much of our “normal” is not normal anymore and not sure if we will ever get it back.
Not going to lie, I have had a couple of anxiety attacks in the early stages of this. How will I pay rent? The bills? Will I survive this?? etc, but I have an amazing husband who is always telling me that it will come together and it will always work out in the end. Well my Paper Fiesta Friends; you did not disappoint! 2 weeks before Easter came, a couple of mothers posted on the Natick Mom’s Facebook page about Paper Fiesta making custom Easter baskets and WHOA, that took off! I had emails, messages, phone calls telling me that they saw the post and were interested in ordering a basket. I was doing curbside pickup, local deliveries and shipping baskets! I made a little over 90 baskets/bags!!! The funny thing is that back in January, I was trying to come up with a marketing plan on how to offer custom Easter baskets. All I did was mention it in the newsletter, but didn’t do much more than that. Seriously, word of mouth definitely helped in this! I was exhausted, but felt blessed and grateful that the community came and supported me during this time!
As of right now, the non-essential businesses are closed until May 4th. I truly believe this will be extended, until when? Who knows! I will try my best to keep running Paper Fiesta and being there for you all! I don’t have an online store (working on that), but I am offering Facetime shopping, or if you are looking for something specific, I am taking pictures of product and emailing them to customers! Some of the vendors that I carry are also having incentives for their brick and mortar shops. Below you will see what some are doing.
Corkcicle These are the stylish bottles that keep hot liquids hot and cold drinks cold! If you head to their website at www.corkcicle.com you can shop and when you check out there is a spot where it says “Support your local store” Just put in Paper Fiesta and they will send me a check as if I was selling them! They are doing this until the end of this month!
Cardthartic  I carry these cards in the store (spinner by the corner window) and they are such a great seller! They are splitting the sales that they get from their on line store with the brick and mortars that carry them. Head over to  www.cardthartic.com and at check out, again, put in your local shop!
I may sound desperate right now, but I am trying to keep my dream alive. I do know of all the help that the government is doing for the small businesses, and in the beginning is sounded great, but seriously everyday something would change and as of today the money has run out and I have not heard back from my bank nor the SBA. To be continued…
A couple of things going on this month.
Easter and Passover have come and gone! I hope you all had a nice holiday.  We usually host Easter and have about 30 people at home filled with kids doing the egg hunt, and adults enjoying the food and beverages. Laughter and making memories all around. This year, it was quite different! It was 6 of us, I still did an Easter egg hunt for my kids and they got their baskets, but I was missing the loudness of the extended family! We all connected through Zoom later on in the afternoon. We had a drink in our hand and we were all trying to talk at the same time!! Fun and chaotic time. It will be talked about for years to come!
Patriot’s Day is this Monday April 20th. This is such a huge holiday in Boston because it’s also the Boston Marathon. Well like everything else, that has changed to September. If you have walked into the store you would see that we have a Mile 10 section filled with books about the Boston Marathon, about running, inspirational books. A little story behind this. My husband has been an EMT for about 18 years. He decided to become an EMT when 9/11 happened. He had felt so helpless watching what was happening in New York that he decided to change career paths. Fast forward many years later, he took a position with Boston EMS. He was there 7 years ago when the Boston Marathon bombing happened. He and many other EMT’s saved and helped lives that day. When people were running away from the blast, they were running towards it. Walt was not a runner before April 15th 2013. That changed. He realized he was lucky to have his life, his limbs and he wanted to run to pay tribute to the victims and survivors. He’s run Boston at least twice and has done marathons in Maine and Connecticut. When we were researching areas to open Paper Fiesta, this was not on our list, but things happen for a reason and I inquired about this space a second time and everything came together. He was so excited that we were on Mile 10 of the Boston Marathon route! Last year was our first year watching it from the store, this year, we will watch it again but in September. Today, Walt is working the front lines. He has self-isolated himself from us and has been staying in Boston. We are truly missing him, but are grateful to him and all the first responders working the front lines.
I also want to pass along that BOSTON: The Documentary will be airing on WBZ on Monday, April 20th at 8pm. We do carry the DVD at the store, but take advantage of it airing on tv and watch it! It talks about the history of the Boston Marathon!
Holocaust Remembrance Day is April 21st. Let us take a small part of our day to think about them and never forget. A book that I highly recommend from a survivor is Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl
Earth Day is April 22nd. Hope we are all still doing our part to keep our earth healthy. Maybe this is all happening because we have been abusing Mother Earth?! The pictures that are out there around the world of before the virus on how smoggy some cities were, to now where some places have completely shut down, and the air has cleared. I have a friend who is in the Coast Guard in Italy and he say’s that he can breathe better and feels the fresh air!
Mother’s Day is coming up on May 10th.  Again, not sure if I will be open, but I do have Mother’s Day gifts and greeting cards! Let me know if you need any help with sending something special out to your mom or friend!
Oh, I almost forgot! There is a LOVE 01760 Facebook group page. They are doing something incredible while we are all quarantined! They have a template of ½ a heart and are asking anyone who is interested to print it out and decorate it the way you would like. When this is all over, they will be laminating them and putting the hearts on display. Not sure when that will happen, but let me tell there are some really creative people out there! Businesses will be participating too, so if you are walking around town, you may see them in a bunch of storefronts!  Head to their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/LOVE01760/ to join!
Fiesta Friends, I truly miss seeing you all. I miss the face to face interactions. I miss our talks, I miss it all! Please keep safe and healthy and hopefully we will see each other next month!
Until then, don’t forget to WASH YOUR HANDS!
-Paula
