Spotlight on Community

Our community is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty and historical treasures. It’s one of the reasons we value our community. Another local treasure is made up of a tremendous group of community loyalists known as the Rotary Club of Ione. This legendary group has focused on making our community a better place to live. Chartered in 1987, it is one of 33,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide in 200 countries. Over the years, they have contributed thousands of volunteer hours. Recent examples include upgrades to the  Evalynn Bishop Hall, rebuilding the Ione Public Library, upgrading Howard Park, supporting educational programs, donating to social causes, promoting leadership, and several other worthwhile community causes. The founder of Rotary International, Paul P. Harris, famously stated that “whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.” That statement is abundantly true for the Rotary Club of Ione. Thank you for all you do for our community! If you would like to join the Rotary Club of Ione, please come to a meeting. They meet at Clark’s Corner every Thursday. The first Thursday of the month is a dinner at 6pm in the Clark’s Corner Banquet Room. All other Thursdays meetings start at 12pm. (Jan. 7th meeting is lunch at 12pm).

The Q Ranch in Ione was named after Charles Green’s Company Q of the Ohio Volunteers in the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. The ranch grew to have a stage stop, post office, blacksmith shop, hanging tree, and race track. Its neighbor, the Winter Ranch (5th-generation Ione resident & present owners of the Q Ranch property) built a blacksmith shop in 1853 (its building still stands on the Winter Ranch today) giving Ione two blacksmith shops. The Ione Valley Hotel was the first hotel and did a thriving business until its destruction by fire on October 8, 1865. It did contribute to the small town’s 2nd name of Bedbug, and its poor distribution of heat to its 3rd name of Freezeout. Many thought the next name would be Venice as the town’s transportation was by boat in many flooding seasons. The town’s founding fathers became embarrassed by these names and thankfully gave it the name of the beautiful valley...Ione!
