Club Voltaire Sessions
A new IPA initiative, starting from 18:00 on Tuesday 8 October. Informal yet informative, come and hear from other associations in the IPA community about the services and programs that are most valued by their own members. Discuss, share, learn. This year’s sharers will include representatives from: The Publishers Association (UK), Syndicat national de l’édition and Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. This event is open to all IPA members — but due to venue size, only the first 20 people to register with IPA (firstname.lastname@example.org) will be admitted. Drinks afterwards at Club Voltaire from 19:30, are open to all IPA members and friends.
IPA Literacy and Book Policy Committee Meeting
This Committee covers all industry policy issues and all initiatives that promote publishing and literacy. The IPA IPA’s Literacy and Book Policy Committee will meet on Wednesday, 9 October from 9:00 to 10:00 in Hall 8.1, Room Symmetrie 2. This meeting is a great opportunity to get an update on current and future IPA activities in the field of literacy: topics to be covered include statistics, VAT, World Book & Copyright Day and World Book Capital and the promotion of national book policies. Those interested in attending the meeting should present themselves to the Committee Chair at the beginning of the meeting.
PA Copyright Committee Meeting
The IPA Copyright Committee will meet on Wednesday, 9 October, from 10:00 to 12:00 in Hall 8.1, Room Symmetrie 2. The discussion will cover the WIPO Marrakesh Treaty, upcoming challenges at WIPO and in other international organisations and an update on a number of copyright related long-term projects. The meeting will also serve as a roundtable to discuss various national initiatives and law reforms related to copyright. Those interested in attending the meeting of the Copyright Committee are asked to please contact José Borghino at email@example.com, or to kindly present themselves to the Committee Chair at the beginning of the meeting.
IPA Freedom to Publish Committee Meeting
The IPA Freedom to Publish Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, 9 October, from 13:00 to 15:00, in Hall 8.1, Room Symmetrie 2. Past activities will be reviewed, members of the Committee will present reports, and a tentative schedule of events for 2013-2014 will be formulated. Those interested in attending the meeting of the Freedom to Publish Committee are asked to please contact José Borghino at firstname.lastname@example.org, or to kindly present themselves to the Committee Chair at the beginning of the meeting.
IPA General Assembly: Elections of Board Members and IPA Vice-President (and future President)
The IPA General Assembly will convene on Thursday, 10 October, from 9:30 until 12:30, in Hall 8.1, Room Symmetrie 2+3. IPA Delegates are requested to please come early to register to vote. The General Assembly will elect a number of members of the new Executive Committee as well as the next IPA Vice-President. The names of the candidates have been communicated separately as part of the statutory working papers. Those with questions relating to the upcoming elections are encouraged to contact the IPA Secretariat at email@example.com.
Programming Committee: IPA Publishers Congress, Bangkok 2014
The IPA’s Programming Committee will convene on Thursday, 10 October, from 12:30 until 13:30. The Committee will refine and work on the Programme for Bangkok 2014. This meeting is only open to members of the Committee. Meeting on Global Statistics
IPA consultant on statistics, Rüdiger Wischenbart will chair this meeting, intended to gather the specialists in this field to share information about data currently collected and identify areas of collaboration and coordination. Places are limited and for statistics experts only. Expression of interest can be directed to Rüdiger at email@example.com.
30th IPA Congress Reception
The 30th IPA Congress will take place in Bangkok on 25-27 March 2014, while Bangkok is still the 2013 World Book Capital. IPA cordially invites you to a cocktail reception on Thursday, 10 October from 17:00 to 18:00 to celebrate. Refreshments will be available and one of the current IPA Vice-Presidents Richard Charkin will speak. The reception will be held at the Thai collective stand in Hall 5.0, E 905. UK PA, AAP and IPA Anti-Piracy Breakfast
The 2013 Anti-Piracy Breakfast is hosted jointly by the UK Publishers Association (PA), the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and IPA. The event will be chaired by Jens Bammel, Secretary General of IPA, and will take place on Friday, 11 October in the Room Illusion 3 on C3 of the Congress Centre. Speakers and their topics will include: Kevin Chapman – Publisher & former President of PANZ, New Zealand; Dr Matthias Leonardy – CEO, GVU (Gesellschaft zur Verfolgung von Urheberrechtsverletzungen); DCI Pete O’Doherty – City of London Police, UK; and Adjoa Opoku — Mayan Book Centre, Ghana. The theme this year is Pirates versus Public-Private Partnerships. Due to limited space this year’s Anti-Piracy Breakfast is open only to member publishers of the host organisations. IPA Educational Publishers Forum Open Meeting
The IPA’s EPF Open Meeting will once again focus on the adoption of new technologies in education; as well as research into Open Educational Resources (OERs) and online learning; and there will also be a report on the effects on educational publishers of recent copyright changes in Canada. EPF chair Graham Taylor will chair the panel, with speakers from Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. Speakers will include Kate Edwards (Association of Canadian Publishers) and Linda Cameron (University of Alberta Press); Goedroen Vanlerberghe (Flemish Publishers Association); Christoph Bornhorn (German Association of Educational Media Publishers); Pieter Ruempol (independent consultant); and Professor Eva Matthes (Augsburg University). The meeting will take place on Friday, 11 October, from 10:30-12:30 in Room Illusion 3 on C3 of the Congress Centre. Admission is free.
National Collective Book Stands Directors Meeting
For the seventh time, IPA is organising a meeting of national book stand organizers on Saturday, 12 October from 10:00 until 11:30; Hall 3.C West, Room Argument. The meeting is intended as a networking opportunity for this group. Publishers will share experiences with various book fairs and discuss issues such as government subsidies for collective stands, attracting sponsors, supporting publishers, hotel and other arrangements. Trade association officials and commercial or government employees responsible for promoting their publishers at international book fairs are all invited to attend.
