In partnership with the Bell Media National Songwriting Initiative and Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA), MusicOntario is participating in the second annual Canadian Songwriter Challenge. This workshop will be hosted at Metalworks Recording Studios between July 26-28, 2016.

The Challenge will facilitate collaborations between six emerging songwriters/artists and three established songwriters/producers as mentors, who will be announced next week!

Participants will have the chance to co-write and demo a song in one day, for three days in row. Each participant will also receive one-on-one business and creative mentorship from a variety of music professionals over catered lunch.
A double whammy on the MusicOntario member front, The Confidence Emperors has premiered the latest Chloe K Jones x DK track with special guests Tiny Danza. The moody, sultry track is "an infectious take on the euphoric (and sometimes obsessive) feelings that creep up when you fall in love," says Confront Magazine's Lisa Fiorilli. Listen to it here!
Mélanie Joly and the Department of Canadian Heritage have appointed twelve experts from outside the Department to guide the government's broad reassessment of Canadian cultural policies. Their goal is to update and hopefully improve a support system for the arts that does not currently function as well as it could in a digital media world.

Although the Minister's Advisory Committee on Canadian Content in a Digital World has no decision-making authority, they will provide Minister Joly with guidance and feedback as she and her staff reevaluate the laws governing Canadian cultural industries today.
On Canada Day, July 1, Newcap Radio will start a Trending Track program to support up-and-coming Canadian musicians.

Each month, a new artist will be chosen to receive sustained airplay and exposure on Newcap's radio stations and social media. One of their songs will be featured at least 30 times a month on Newcap’s network of stations, which spans from 99.1 HITS-FM (St. John’s, NL) to 90.3 AMP Radio (Calgary, AB).

For each station, at least half the airplays will occur during peak listening hours. A different promotional intro will also be created for each station.

Contact Amy Ballard at Ottawa Hot 89.9 FM for eligibility requirements and to nominate a Trending Track artist.
On June 27, Google signed a multi-year licensing deal with Ontario's LyricFind to display song lyrics in its search results. Google users will no longer have to click on an external link to see this information, as search results will now immediately display the full lyrics to a song.

LyricFind is a privately-held company based in Toronto. Its deal with Google will make lyrics from over 4,000 publishers available through Google's search results, as well as the Google Play Music app. This goes to show how data related to lyrics can be incorporated into different online services that facilitate the discovery and sharing of music.
MusicOntario's and the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA)'s Membership Services Coordinator, Rosalyn Dennett, has begun a new role at Ontario Live Music.

During her time working for MusicOntario, CIMA and Canadian Blast, Rosalyn demonstrated a passion for engaging with artists, venues and the industry to help grow the valuable resource that is Canadian music.

"It is with bittersweet feelings that I announce my departure from CIMA and MusicOntario. It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve their robust memberships, and I have been lucky to work with such a wonderful team," says Rosalyn.

Beyond her work for music industry associations, Rosalyn is also a talented and active musician in her own right. She continues to play high-profile folk festivals throughout Canada and the world, such as the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa and Tønder Festival in Denmark.

We congratulate Rosalyn very much, and wish her all the best in her future professional and artistic endeavours!
The Americana Music Association has announced that Buddy Miller will return as the leader for the Americana All-Star House Band. They will perform during the Americana Honours and Awards ceremony on September 21 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

Miller is a singer, songwriter and producer who has received multiple Americana Awards and GRAMMY Awards. His All-Star band will feature the finest Americana musicians from around the world, including Dave Cobb, Stuart Duncan, Fred Eltringham, Matt Rollings, Don Was and The McCrary Sisters.
Singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and teacher Anne Lederman will receive the Folk Music Ontario Estelle Klein Award at the FMO Conference Awards Brunch on Sunday, October 23.

Anne co-founded Muddy York, The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, LOKA and Lederman/Bell. She was also the leader of Come From Every Way and Fiddlesong. She has been a regular guest on the CBC's Vinyl Café, Fresh Air and Morningside.

To date, Anne has released five albums of original and traditional Canadian songs under her own name, and also appeared on 50 albums by other artists. She is the founding Artistic Director of both Worlds of Music Toronto and World Fiddle Day Toronto, and continues to record, perform and teach music today.
