Uptown Campus

April 30, 2020

Dear Uptown Families,

This week I sent out two letters: one for 3-7th grade families, the other for 8th grade families. Please make sure to take a moment to review the appropriate letter.

We often celebrate Teacher & Staff Appreciation week during state testing, although nationally it falls next week.  Our Teacher & Staff Appreciation Committee is still working on something special for teachers and staff when we return, but remember that you can also show your appreciation by participating in the Morning Bell Teacher Appreciation Campaign. If you love a teacher or staff member, ring a bell, bang on a pot, just make some noise at 9:00 AM on May 5th.  If you want to share videos or pictures, use the tag #NOLAMorningBell.

Next week you will receive more details about how we will celebrate the end of the year with our International Car Parade.  It will truly be a special moment to say goodbye and celebrate our 8th graders!

L’Shalom,

Dr. A.

Family Fun Night 2020
Dear ISL families,

As you know, our ISL Family Fun Night was to take place on Friday, March 27, 2020. We scheduled our event last year and have been working and promoting it, since. Due to the stay at home order, we rescheduled to Saturday, May 30, in hopes that we would be able to close out the year with a school-wide celebration, once the city reopened.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. It is our goal to honor your time, effort, and the funds you contribute. Postponing or canceling events is not something we take lightly. There are countless individuals and hard work that help bring this to life; you, our attendees, vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and other community supporters. There are the businesses and organizations that support ISL and the work we do through donations and sponsorships to our events and our donors. However, following the current safety guidelines this year, it is simply not possible to come together as a community for an event like this.

For these reasons, we have decided to cancel this year's ISL's Family Fun Night at City Park. The silver lining is that fortunately, we already have our 2021 event scheduled for next spring. Our 2021 ISL Family Fun Night is to take place on Friday, March 26, 2021. We know that, especially with the current situation, March 2021 will be here before we know it, and we are excited and looking forward to celebrating together then.

We thank all of our event donors. Your donations help ISL continue the work we do educating students. Event donations will be used towards next year's event. If you purchased tickets, VIP Wine tent wristbands, Raffle Tickets, or signed up as a Corporate Sponsor, we would like to say thank you for your support. You should have received an email on Wednesday regarding cancelation of the event and refund request procedures. If you purchased tickets and did not receive this email, please contact us at development@isl-edu.org.

In closing, on behalf of Ms. Vanessa Levy (Development Representative), myself, and our entire ISL staff, we want to send a special message out to our volunteers. You worked tirelessly, helping us plan and promote our event, helping us coordinate every detail so we could make it fun for all, as well as profitable to support our programming. Thank you! We know many additional volunteers were going to join us on the night of the event, as well, and we thank you! We hope to see everyone next year and know we appreciate all of your contributions and support.

We wish all of our students the best of luck through the end of the year and this summer. Welcome to all 2nd graders moving from Dixon to Uptown and 5th graders moving from Westbank to Uptown. To our 8th graders, best of luck as you move on to High School and beyond. Have an excellent rest of the year and summer!

Thank you,

Karla Marie Cochran

Research indicates that positive character traits are the foundation of success in academics, home life, and the work world.  In our school we take this very seriously. In fact, it is part of our mission #CommunityResponsibility. We work together with families, helping to shape these qualities in our young students. Our social workers have developed excellent programs and wonderful ways to engage students in this process. These programs are implemented at our campuses and bring staff and students together for a positive purpose.

We have decided to bring this idea of a kindness campaign to our community, virtually and invite you to participate in our #ISLKindnessChallenge. Help us spread some positivity through art within our community!

To add another level of fun, we have made it a challenge. Share your art and tag ISL! Who knows… your artwork may appear in the ISL St. Charles Streetcar Ad.
