Skål UK Newsletter - February 2013

A Message from your new President

David Lord, President Skâl International UKThank you all in having the faith to elect me your President for this year, I will do my best to satisfy that faith and give you a memorable year. I am stepping into the shoes of a President who has led the club through turbulent times in a calm and convincing manner.  Julian thank you for the way you have encouraged the National Executive and UK Club Presidents and made great efforts to reach out to the membership.

Skål was created as a “friendship club” of an International Industry, Tourism. The purpose to engage with competitors, suppliers, colleagues and even “adversaries”, in different areas, countries and continents, in a spirit of conviviality and friendship; to promote good business ethics, develop friendship and understanding between counties and races who all had a common goal of serving the travelling public to the best of their ability; I suggest those principles still hold good and perhaps in the current economic climate are even more relevant.

Over the 25 years I have been an active Skålleague I have learned of the great work Skål has done locally, nationally and internationally. I have watched clubs in the UK and Channel Islands supporting each other and encouraging the development of young Skål, the promotion of the Skål dream at exhibitions and shows and finally I have had the privilege of benefitting from international Skål contacts to make an impossible dream for a seriously disabled person become a reality, emotional stuff but also a fantastic example of friendship, co-operation and a great result for the old fashioned concept of “networking”.

We need clubs to go out into their communities, identify the prospective members, extol the values of Skål and encourage development and membership, we must not get bogged down with petty bureaucracy, rules and negativity; in this way the Skål movement will not only survive in the UK but will thrive.

Opportunities exist for Skålleagues to be part of their local communities, promoting their businesses, networking with associates and affiliated business for the benefit of all. An example of this has to be the development of Young Skål through contact, partnership and support of local FE colleges and training establishments that include Tourism, Catering and Travel courses in their syllabuses; these students are the future of our industry, lets grab them early, demonstrate our enthusiasm for our industry and the benefit and support being a Skålleague can bring.  Likewise we should be embracing the benefits of Heritage and Green Tourism which should be a readymade source of potential members...

In years to come I hope that my grandchildren (who are growing up in Australia, with both parents totally employed in Tourism, Travel and Leisure) will be proud to know all about Skål, how it helped their grandfather in difficult times and how its friendship and connections made the world a smaller, and kinder place in which to live and earn a living.

I am looking forward to visiting as many of you as I can during this year.   Flybe are very supportive of Skål and are making my travel arrangements tolerable so even the far flung will be visited! I know that our friends in Guernsey will be putting on a fantastic National Assembly in April and I hope to see you there.

Regards and Skål

David

BRIGHTON SUSSEX & THE CHANNEL

Congratulations to Bernard and Marianne Roland on the Celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

JERSEY

At their recent AGM in Guernsey Martha Bernstein was elected unopposed as their club President – only the second woman to hold this position.  Martha’s considerable help for husband Julian during his term as National President will stand her in good stead for the year ahead!!

SOUTHAMPTON

At their recent AGM held on January 25th 2012 Dieter Schlieben – President of Skål International Southampton was presented with the Ken Maiden Award.  This award is gifted by our National President to a Skålleagues who in his opinion has done exceptional work on behalf of his club.
This award will be extra special to Dieter as Ken Maiden was a founder member of Portsmouth Skål where Dieter was a former President and they were close friends for many years.

(I did include this note last month but in haste, got the name of the award wrong. Having been severely reprimanded by our scribe, apologies to all! Ian)
