Skål UK News - December 2012
Dear Skålleagues,
The Police were out in force at Belfast Airport for my arrival last week – well that was until I realised that a certain Mrs Clinton was about to arrive – but there is no harm in dreaming is there?
I attended a wonderful Christmas lunch with the Northern Ireland International Skål Club. We were also joined by the National President from Southern Ireland so it was a multinational luncheon.
I was also able to visit the new Titanic Experience which was really fascinating. On the Thursday evening Diane Toner took me with her husband to the Central Law Courts and we listened to the “Pro Bono Choir “(made up of the Law Society and Bar Choirs) give their Christmas Concert in the spectacular setting. It was a special experience that has further expanded my wonderful year as your National President
I have nearly reached the end of the year and if I have not been able to travel to visit you please forgive me. There is only a limit to how often I can get away from Jersey. I have however enjoyed seeing many of you around the country and I hope that you will enjoy the Festive Season and that you will have a Fantastic New Year full of Health, Happiness and Skål!!
And finally …..
A Skål Club was looking for a way to increase attendance and participation at their regular meetings. One member suggested bringing in a hypnotist. The Council agreed, a famous hypnotist was hired , publicity distributed and everyone was pleased.
A few weeks later the meeting hall was packed, and the people sat fascinated as the hypnotist withdrew a pocket watch. The hypnotist began chanting "Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch---"
The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs of eyes following the swaying watch, until suddenly the hypnotist’s fingers slipped and the watch fell to the floor.
“Skål” said the hypnotist.
It took three weeks to sign up all the new members!
I am therefore off to buy a new pocket watch to try this out at our next meeting
Happy Christmas and Skål to you all
Julian
