Skål UK News - Guernsey Special!
The brilliant sunshine awaiting us on landing in Guernsey was matched by the Skål welcome from John Watts with our transport to Peninsula Hotel.
The National Committee on Friday morning was attended after coffee by our International President Mok Singh. The frank and open discussions about the UK and the rest of the organisation were really helpful and the suggestions and information that came out of that meeting will help us in our way forward.
The raising of the flag was postponed until after the general meeting due to technical reasons - the lanyard was stuck! The attendance at the general meeting was excellent and again President Mok was in attendance. The meeting was lively and informative and it is hoped that the high numbers will continue.
Friday night's theme was Night at the Movies with a prize for best costume. The winner was Marilyn Monroe (Young Skålleague Gemma from Guernsey) who did look gorgeous. Lots of inventive costumes and a great party night.
A rather large man in a red fez appeared to be having a good time too!! As was a certain gentlemen being persuaded to buy raffle tickets....
The sea food buffet was amazing and the disco hit just the right note!!!
The highlight of our Saturday trip was watching our National President David together with International President Mok fire the Noonday Gun at Castle Cornet. It was a great honour for Skål to be allowed to do this and it was done with great ceremony and aplomb. Lunch was taken at Castle Cornet and was attended by members of Visit Guernsey and their Minister for Tourism. There was ample opportunity to visit the Castle and the museums. A great guide told the tales and an enjoyable afternoon followed .
Saturday night saw us all resplendent in our finery and regalia. The dining room had been beautifully decorated with our banners of the attending clubs adorning the walls and the tables had beautiful flower displays and balloons in Skål colours. There were lively speeches and plenty of gifts and banners were exchanged.
Congratulations to Brighton, Sussex and the Channel
