Transition to HE: Managing your Money
FREE SESSIONS AVAILABLE IN YOUR SIXTH FORM

When we ask current University of Winchester students what they wished they had known before they started university one of the things that is always top of the list is managing their money.

This can at times include student finance but often it’s about what to do with all the money when it appears in their account and when there is very little left.

In 2019, according to the National Student Money Survey by Save the Student, on average students spend £806.62 each month when at university.

However, what they are spending it on varies and often there are expenses that are a surprise when they have been used to living at home.

Our interactive workshop helps students to prepare their money mindset for university. They focus on refining their knowledge about their income and expenses, aiming to manage and budget money over several scenarios. There is also the ability to looks at costs of living they may not have considered and ways of earning money at university.

It also helps student to think about the questions they should be asking before they embark on university, including how to compare accommodation costs, are their bursaries and scholarships available and is it cheaper to apply closer to home.

The session can be squeezed into 20 minutes but better suits a 45 minute to 1-hour time frame.

For more information or to arrange for a session in your sixth form please contact Ruth Boyce (Senior School and Colleges Development Coordinator) ruth.boyce@winchester.ac.uk

SUPER-CURRICULAR RESOURCES
WHERE TO LOOK
NOW IS AN IDEAL TIME to get Year 12 to start thinking ahead to their UCAS applications (just as you got to the UCAS deadline on 15th and still Year 13 students are applying as late applicants!).

Getting Year 12 to think about UCAS can motivate them to work harder over the Spring term.

And some Year 12s will appreciate the diversion from just examination-focused material!

Here's a list of 10 sites to refer students to:

JOIN 700+ HEADS OF SIXTH IN A CLOSED FB GROUP
IF YOU sometimes need to ask a quick question to other heads of sixth then join the largest FB group exclusively for post 16 leaders.

To help ensure we maintain it for just sixth form leaders or similar, we ask you a screening question with your school/college email but that is only to ensure you work in a school. It helps us screen out students and parents.

CHOOSING INSURANCE CHOICES
Resource Subscribers might wish to use this video to encourage Year 13 to visit their insurance choice university.

Get students to compare their insurance choice with a 3rd choice university rather than against their first choice.

Ready-made PPT to explain the way students might compare their choices - download

By comparing to 3rd choice, they might see more positive features rather than, what often happens, the insurance choice is the poor relation of their first choice and they might not even intend to go their if they don't get their first choice.
