Free Small Business Support Coming to Horsham

 

Looking to start a small business? Want to develop your existing small business?
Help is on the way with the Victorian Government’s Small Business Bus coming to Horsham on August 19th 2016 as part of the 2016 Small Business Festival. 
The Small Business Bus offers free mentoring throughout the day with an experienced business professional who can assist you in taking your small business to the next level.
On board the Small Business Bus you will find information on Small Business Victoria’s programs and services as well as tools and tips to help you start or grow your business.  
Bookings are essential for the mentoring sessions, so reserve your place now at
business.vic.gov.au/sbb or call 13 22 15.
The Small Business Bus will be located at 55 Firebrace Street Horsham (Outside the White Hart Hotel) between 10am and 4pm.

2016 3WM MIXXFM Wimmera Business Awards

The Wimmera Business Awards are held every two years, profiling Wimmera businesses and recognising the contribution of different types of business to the Wimmera economy. The awards offer an opportunity for regional businesses to promote new innovations and what they are doing well.

Wimmera Development Association proudly presents the 2016 Awards which will commence with a Launch event on Friday 1 July, culminating with the gala presentation evening to be held on Friday 14 October 2016. Applications will open on Friday 1 July and will close at 5pm Friday 29 July. more information

Build Your Business Beyond Drought Workshops 

Wimmera Development Association in collaboration with the Wimmera Business Centre and Small Business Victoria will deliver a number of workshops and mentoring sessions across the Wimmera Southern Mallee region.
Workshops will cover the topics of;
Financial health checks
Digital business and customer service
Business resilience and risk management
Succession planning
This proposal originally covered the five shires of the Wimmera Southern Mallee and will now be used to provide support across the 11 shires recognised in the drought funding.  The program will be funded through the state government drought fund.
The small business support package is currently being scheduled for rollout across the region during July & August.

Building Resilience in Farming

Building Resilience in Farming is an information sharing and practical research project examining blockers to and opportunities for building resilience in farming communities and agri-business.  It aims to add value to existing networks, research and sustainability activities within the Wimmera farming communities.
The ultimate outcomes are to:

  • Strengthen existing networks
  • Provide a focus on sustainable agriculture
  • Deliver practical implementation of sustainable farming practices in the Wimmera and demonstration models for the farming and agri-business sectors
  • Share stories and case studies of practical implementation of sustainable farming practices in the Wimmera and demonstration models for the farming and agri-business sectors
  • Improve understanding by Councils of information channels that can effectively provide services, information and innovation technologies suitable for farming and agri-business consumption
  • Bring Councils closer to our farming communities and agricultural industries
  • Promote ongoing change of practices beyond the life of the project

The project, auspiced by West Wimmera Shire Council has been delivered by Wimmera Development Association over the past 18 months. 
Although this project is now complete, WDA will continue to deliver the quarterly newsletter, monthly calendar of events, Ag facebook page, Ag resource pages on the WDA website, livestock diversification information, WSM Ag Training Network, and looking for value adding opportunities for the regions Ag sector.

More than Gumboots and Tractors Student Careers Day

Following on from the successful Careers Advisors careers day held at Grains Innovation Park, planning has commenced for two Ag careers days for students from across the region.  To be held on the 16th & 18th of August to coincide with 2016 Science week student will undertake hands on activities at Grains Innovation Park as well as tours to a number of the private research and development facilities in Horsham. 
The two days are a collaboration between WDA, WSM LLEN, AgVic and the Victorian Wheat Research Foundation.
Students attending will be given snap shots into Ag Science related careers and exposed to a number of leading research and development facilities based in Horsham.  Future sessions will be planned to highlight general agricultural pathways that are available.

Census 2016
The Australian Census provides an important snapshot of Australia’s people and their housing.  The 2016 Census will be held on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. 

As part of the move towards a Digital Census, more than two thirds of the population are expected to complete the Census online this year.  To support the transition towards a Digital Census, Horsham Rural City Council, together with a Regional Leadership Skills Project team, will conduct a group drop in session will be held at the Civic Centre on Census Night between 4 pm and 8pm. 

Twelve workstations connected to the internet will be available for use in the reception area.  People will also be encouraged to bring in their own devices and Wi-Fi will be provided.  Residents will need to bring their Census letter from the ABS which includes their unique login.  Light refreshments will be provided and there will be staff and volunteers available to take people through the steps of completing the Census online.   Michael Dusting, ABS North-West Support Manager and a number of ABS Area Supervisors will also be in attendance.  For more details contact Julie Flaherty at WDA on 5381 6504
