Emma Kealy's Ten Tips for Success
In a new initiative for 2015, Leadership Wimmera is hosting a Lunchtime Leaders Series of speakers where leaders from the Wimmera have been invited to share their own leadership story with either the Business Leaders Group or Regional Leadership Skills.
Emma Kealy, Member for Lowan, very generously spent some time with this year's BLG at Workshop 1 recently.
She spoke about her life, education, work, experiences and passions. Emma shared the ten golden rules which she lives by with the group, and has given us permission to pass them on to you:
1. In order to lead, you need people - a team - around you.
2. Make sure you keep the end goal in mind, but be flexible about how you get there.
3. It is much easier to learn from the mistakes (and Successes) of others.
There is always something we could have done better. Take the time to look back and assess what you would do differently next time.
5. Capture the ideas of others and empower them to make it a reality. It helps to build a strong team and to implement change.
6. If something isn't working then just try a new way. You can always change it back tomorrow.
7. If you have something to add to a conversation make sure you share it. Don't leave it until after the meeting.
8. Be respectful of other views and perspectives. Make an effort to understand WHY people have a differing opinion to you. If you can understand the motivations of other people it usually makes it easier to work with them (as you can better predict how they will react).
9. Deal in facts and evidence, not emotions. This is vitally important when decision making.
10. If you don't believe in yourself, then why should anyone else believe in you.
