July 2021
Graphic which reads, "Honoring diversity, promoting visibility, celebrating uniqueness."
Dear Friend,

Did you know that Boston was the first city to hold a Disability Pride Day in 1990? This was the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed by President George H.W. Bush, mandating equal opportunities in all areas of public life for people with disabilities.

July is a month to celebrate. To celebrate and show appreciation for our unique differences and to come together and challenge systemic ableism wherever it exists.

Looking for ways to get involved? Check out this
Disability Pride Toolkit and Resource Guide from the National Council on Independent Living! Share your own story on social media to promote positive disability culture. Or, learn something new by taking a Disability Awareness and Cultural Intelligence workshop.

The power of our community is strong. Let's continue using our voices to end disability stigmas and to build inclusive environments for people of all abilities.

NILP Celebrates Juneteenth

NILP's CEO with Nicole McClain from the North Shore Juneteenth Association and NILP staff members Lynette, Helina and Michelle
Juneteenth is now a federally recognized holiday! On Friday, June 18th, NILP was proud to welcome Nicole McClain of the North Shore Juneteenth Association to speak with our staff about the importance of this holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. Nicole's presentation was eye-opening and prompted an engaging discussion afterward.

A very memorable moment also happened when Nicole was about to play "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (The Black National Anthem), but there was a glitch in the technology. That's when Michelle, the Operations Manager for our
Northeast Recovery Learning Community, lifted her voice and began singing the anthem impromptu. It touched us all.

As much as this was a day of learning, it was also a day of service. NILP staff donated several boxes of food and other in-kind donations for the Lynn Racial Justice Coalition and made a financial contribution to the North Shore Juneteenth Association. Please visit their website
here to learn more about their important work in the community.
