Right to Life NSW:
COVID-19 Week 2

02 April, 2020

Dear Supporters of Life

Our staff have now transitioned to work completely from home for the foreseeable future.  Phones are being answered by an answering service with messages passed onto the relevant staff member.  All staff are continuing to work for Life.  Here is a summary of what we have been doing:

Office Manager, Debbie Croker,
< >
Debbie, has been hard at work setting up our systems to work from home.  She is a super-start Administrator who keeps our spirits up with her cheery smile and her passion for Life.

Membership Officer, Dominica Connor,
< >
Dom, has been phoning members, checking their welfare and updating their details.  Dom’s positive attitude has been helping our members through these tough times, especially those who are isolated at home.

Media Communications OfficerKathryn Gerardino,
< >
Kathryn, continues to put together our newsletters, and our media posts.  Her passion for Life shines through everything she writes and posts.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Rachel Carling,
< >
Rachel, has continued to encourage politicians to take up the cause for Life on state and federal levels.  This crisis is not a time to rest – abortions continue to occur including prescriptions for the abortion pill accessible via telehealth, doctors being given permission to cross state borders to perform late term abortions, and early term abortions have been categorised as “Category 1” for elective surgeries.  If you are as disgusted as Dr Rachel about this, you can get involved by writing letters to your MPs.

Update on Assisted Suicide & Euthanasia

While the NSW parliament is distracted by the implications of the COVID-19 crisis, Queensland parliament tabled their scheduled report into "Assisted Dying" on Tuesday.  This report recommends that legislation be developed with no requirement for imminent death, although a criteria around having an advanced and progressive terminal, chronic or neurodegenerative medical condition will still apply.  The Greens expressed their desire for any Queensland legislation to be open to people with dementia via advanced care directives and for "mature children".

"The Staggering, Heartless Cruelty Toward the Elderly"

With people 70+ being encouraged to self-isolate this week, I thought this article was a timely reminder of the pressure our elders are sometimes put under.  Author Rabbi Dr Shai Held, describes the staggering, heartless cruelty toward the elderly during this global pandemic.

“Crises can elicit compassion, but they can also evoke callousness. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve witnessed communities coming together (even as they have sometimes been physically forced apart), and we’ve seen individuals engaging in simple acts of kindness to remind the sick and quarantined that they are not forgotten. Yet from some quarters, we’ve also seen a degree of cruelty that is truly staggering.” - Dr Shai Held
