Standing for Life: Week 7 – Right to Life during COVID-19

06 May, 2020

Dear Supporters of Life,

This coming Sunday is Mother's Day - which gives me an opportunity here to write about one of my favourite subjects - Motherhood.
Here at Right to Life NSW we value the irreplaceable role of women as mothers. We, along with other pro-life organisations and individuals in New South Wales, seek to stand in solidarity with every pregnant woman (ie Mother), especially those for whom pregnancy, for whatever reason, is experienced as a crisis or as a problem to be solved. We believe that, whatever the medical, physical, psychological and social circumstances of a woman who is carrying an unborn child, there is a life-affirming solution that will respect the rights and needs of both the mother and her unborn child.
Put simply - we value Motherhood.

As Serrin Foster, the famous pro-life feminist in the US said in her landmark speech against abortion:
“Abortion betrays the basic feminist principles of nonviolence, nondiscrimination, and justice for all. Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women—and that women have settled for less. Women deserve better”.
“Feminism [in its original form] was born of abolition. All people are equal. All choices are not. We envision a better day, a day when womanhood is celebrated, mothers are supported, fatherhood is honored, and every child is cherished”.

Foster's last sentence here strikes me in particular.  It describes the kind of society the pro-life community is aiming for.  We are looking for the day when:  Mothers are supported.  Womanhood is celebrated - and being a Mother is embraced as part of this.  Once this happens, then Fatherhood will also be honoured and Every Child will be Cherished.

Let's take the time to celebrate this Mother's Day.  Celebrate the Mother who gave birth to us.  Celebrate the Mothers in our community who stood against societal and/or familial pressure to choose to give Life to their baby.   And celebrate the Mothers who chose the path of adoption.

Thank you Mothers - for choosing Life,
"Dear Future Mom" by CoorDown
This Video, entitled "Dear Future Mom", was created for World Down Syndrome Day in 2014.  It conveys a strong and comforting message to expectant mothers who have just found out they are carrying a child with Down Syndrome.  It was written for a French audience (so you will notice it is subtitled) and it is so moving.

French television thought it was not of "general interest" and censored its broadcasting in France which led to a pro-life-led legal challenge.

It is appalling that such a video still needs to be defended.  Watch it and let me know what you think.  It will be posted on our Facebook page later today if you would like to comment directly through social media.

[Warning:  this video was so sweet it made me cry - you may wish to have the tissues ready!]
Final Word for Week 7
Unfortunately, despite some coronavirus-related restrictions being lifted, Mother's Day will still be a very quiet and isolating day for many of us.  We can't take our mothers out for a meal.  We can't go to church as a family to participate in a Mother's Day orientated service.  Some of us can't even visit our mothers or our children because they live interstate (myself included).  For many of us this will be difficult.

Let us do everything we can to reach out to the mothers around us to encourage them this Sunday: send them a message, post on their Facebook page, email them a link to the video above... if you have any creative thoughts on celebrating Mothers during this period of restriction, send them in so we can share them with others :)

I look forward to supplying you with another COVID-19 update next week.  In the meantime, I hope that you stay safe and that you are all well.

Yours in the Defence of Life,
Dr. Rachel Carling
