As the Coronavirus continues to develop both globally and locally, we want to keep you up to date on the latest decisions we have made regarding our services and activities as a church:
In light of the government's declaration this week on mandatory self-quarantine for all travellers to Hong Kong and the heightened associated risk of community outbreak in our city, we have decided to extend the closure of our Sunday gatherings through and including Palm Sunday, 5 April. Making the decision now to close for the next three weeks will enable us to plan better for our ministries and Church Everywhere experience during this time. This will also enable us to get through the current two-week self-quarantine period and reassess where our city is at in that time. But like you, we are really missing being together! We can’t wait to reconnect all together as one body when time and health permits!
We really hope to reopen for our Easter Sunday services, and we are working towards this goal. However, we will make a decision on this closer to the time and will keep everyone updated as the situation in the city develops. Please join us in prayer that this virus can get under full control and we can gather again safely to worship our risen Lord on Easter Sunday morning!
We want to continue to stress that church is not closed. As I said recently on Church Everywhere, church is not a building or a programme but a people. You are The Vine, and you matter a great deal. The river is flowing, and you are an essential part of it. We want to encourage you in this time to take this season as a chance to lean into new ways to deepen your faith through using our Church Everywhere experience either as a personal devotional tool or through sharing the experience with a small group of people. Your spiritual development is not on hold in this season. On the contrary, now more than ever is the chance for you to take charge of your personal relationship with Jesus and enjoy exploring new avenues of church, faith, and community in these times.
'I lift my eyes up to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.' – Psalm 121:1-2
As the Coronavirus situation continues to worsen around the world, the global church is being presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity. The soil is fertile for the gospel as people continue to face deep uncertainty about their future. As the church, we have the only true unshakeable certainty in this world—the Lord who made the heaven and earth and holds everything in it within His hands. Can I encourage you this week to lift up your eyes and find your own strength in the Lord, knowing He is the mountain upon which you can truly build your life. And then from that place of comfort and confidence, begin to reach out boldly with the hope that is found in Him. Our God is powerful—let's pray for Him to move in love and kindness in this time.
