THE GALLERY COMES TO YOU N°4

Dani Karavan, Murou Art Forest, 1998-2006. Murou, Nara Prefecture, Japan. © Studio Karavan
Dear friend(s) of the gallery,

In his notes on Edgar Poe, Charles Baudelaire wrote "It’s this admirable, this immortal instinct for Beauty that leads us to consider the Earth and its spectacles as a correspondence with The Sky". This time of quarantine makes us reflect on humanity and the earth that the artist Dani Karavan has never stopped sculpting. Ever since his first site-specific sculpture Neguev Monument, which was created in the 60s in the Israeli desert of Beer Sheva, Dani Karavan has used a site-specific as the primary material of his creation ; light is used to draw in space, the sound of wind and water to enchant and enhance its movement.

From then on, Dani Karavan deploys throughout the world his archi-sculptures of simple and universal forms steming from each site, works of memory as a tribute to life, in the line of the spatial sculptures of 20th century masters such as Brancusi, Giacometti and Noguchi. Dani Karavan has always remained true to his profound nature of childhood innocence and pacifism. He writes: "I was born on the Mediterranean shore, I have walked in the dunes, along olive trees, mountains and valleys that survived horrible wars. Memory has become part of my own being, and if memory is forgotten, one loses one's direction, and the path".

On this International Day of the Earth, we are pleased to share with you an interview of Dani Karavan's views on Art, as well as some images of his work: his Murou environmental sculpture which we recently visited in Japan for our trip organized around 3 artists of the gallery, and his most recent sculptures in raw earth of which the French curator Germain Viatte writes that they possess "the rhythmic familiarity of a processional cortege, alike those of men, by manifesting a true being".

We wish you a wonderful week and look forward to seeing you soon.
