sat down with Melanie
to find out her secret to success...
Melanie has been "listening to her head, heart and gut" since growing up in the woods in the beautiful Black Hills. Her larger than life family encouraged it and modeled it. Her life experiences, which include a BFA, a professional dance career traveling the world with Pina Baush, teaching in various Universities across the US, founding a Montessori/Waldorf school in Spearfish, homeschooling her children, becoming a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist
and Holistic Health Practitioner
, teaching yoga classes for 35 years, and studying BodyTalk, have brought her back to Rapid City, SD. Hard work and a true love and affinity for her clients have resulted in a thriving Body Wisdom
practice at her newly remodeled Arrow Street clinic. In addition to offering Advanced BodyTalk and Phoenix Rising Sessions, Melanie, one of the International BodyTalk Association's newest Access Trainers, now offers Access classes in Rapid City and Sioux Falls, with plans to bring Access to other parts of the state, region and world! Melanie is the founder of BodyTalk South Dakota
, (which became a South Dakota non-profit corporation thanks to the leaders!) which has a vision to spread the benefits of BodyTalk across the state, and beyond!
Q: What is your definition of success?
Melanie: I grew up hearing 'do what makes you happy.' If you love what you do, you will be successful. I also read a quote as a young girl from Walt Disney when asked about success. He said he felt his brother, the mailman, was a success because he was happy
. The pursuit of happiness is quite a challenge! We have everything we need to be happy right now inside of us, and part of that is accepting all of the other emotions as well.
Q: What's your secret?
Melanie: I don't believe I have a secret. I do believe that I continue to stay in 'beginners mind.' To take the 'cup half full' theory further...If there were three cups in front of me and one was "all the things I know I know," and another was "all the things I know I don't know" and the third was "all the things I don't know I don't know", I would want to always remember that the last is probably the fullest.
Q: What's your favorite thing about BodyTalk?
Melanie: Definitely the people. I love the eclectic nature of our circles, our cooperation as practitioners, our generosity as BTSD leaders, and our diverse perspectives. I so appreciate that Angela Adkins, while presenting to the Instructors at the International BodyTalk Association in Malta this last year, cited BodyTalk South Dakota as one of three of the world's most vibrant BodyTalk matrices / communities. I feel very blessed to be living here.
Q: What would you say is the most amazing BodyTalk results you have witnessed in your 4 1/2 year career?
Melanie: Even though I've witnessed many amazing results, my favorites are when people continue to come for sessions after they have resolved the pain, diagnosis or chronic issue that brought them in, and are freed up to then dive deeper into their vibrant health! The comments such as "I feel more like me than I have since I was a kid!" or "I am courageous enough to be myself now" or "I feel so much joy (peace, contentment, happiness, etc.)" are by far my favorites because I can see it in their eyes, hear it in their voice, feel it from their heart. BodyTalk is a mutually beneficial arrangement for all!
