Dear Dan
It's been a busy few months of performances, preparing for the premiere of A Violence of Gifts and composing new work. I'm writing to let you know my recent news and upcoming projects. It would be lovely to see you at a performance, if you can make it along.
Best wishes,

Upcoming Performances

A Violence of Gifts

BBC National Chorus and Orchestra of Wales, Martyn Brabbins conductor, Elizabeth Atherton soprano, Roderick Williams baritone | Sat 18th Apr 7.30pm | St David's Hall, Cardiff

My new 40 minute work, commissioned by the BBC for soprano, baritone, chorus and orchestra, explores the origins of light, matter and life from a 21st century perspective. The piece weaves together music and poetry with the very latest scientific theories and discoveries from CERN with a new libretto from Owen Sheers. To find out more, read Steph Power's interview in the Wales Arts Review. The performance will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 Live in Concert.

Five Memos

Hyeyoon Park violin, Huw Watkins piano | Sun 10th May 7.30pm | St Mary's Church, Kintbury

Hyeyoon Park violin, Roderick Chadwick piano | Tue 12th May 7.30pm | The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London
For tickets please contact Catriona McCormick

My new piece, commissioned by London Music Masters for Heyeyoon Park and Huw Watkins, is inspired by the writings of the Italian author Italo Calvino and will be premiered at the Newbury Spring Festival in May. Calvino was due to deliver the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures series at Harvard in 1985-6 but suddenly died before taking up the professorship. The incomplete scripts were published in 1988 as Six Memos for the Next Millennium. The five surviving essays artistic virtues that Calvino wanted to pass on to future generations.

Weds 13th May 7.30pm | The Forge, Camden

My piece Drift, commissioned by Aldeburgh Music and created in collaboration with audiovisual artist Max Hattler, will be screened at Claudia Molitor's event at The Forge in Camden; part of the Wednesdays at the Forge series.

Other News

In June I'll be heading off to Chubbut province in Patagonia for two weeks to research ideas for a new piece for the BBC National Chorus of Wales. In partnership with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Tŷ Cerdd has organised a composer exchange between Wales and Argentina. I will be working alongside Patagonian composer Hector MacDonald to create new works to mark the 150th anniversary of the first Welsh settlement in Argentina. Read more.

National Youth Orchestra of Wales

Following the last two years' brilliant Young Composers Residencies, I will be running the composers' programme again with National Youth Orchestra of Wales this summer. For further details and to apply please visit National Youth Arts Wales.
