Save the date: On June 17, 2014 at 5 p.m. we will stage our next Life Science Circle which will focus on applied research. The event marks the start of ZIT's special life sciences program in the second half of 2014: 2 million Euros will be available for business R&D projects. Furthermore, the Austrian Institute of Technology will present fascinating projects and research collaborations.» Info & Registration
The second Life Science Circle this year will take place on September 17, 2014 at the 6th ÖGMBT Annual Meeting in Vienna. Registration and abstract submission for the ÖGMBT Annual Meeting, September 15-18, will be opened soon. This year's motto is “Life Sciences Meet Entrepreneurship”.
We look forward to meeting you at conhIT in Berlin, at EuroMedtech in Linz, at the WKO business delegation in China and Japan, or at one of the upcoming events in Vienna.

FUNDING Opportunities  in Vienna  

AWS: business plan competition Best of Biotech is about to start
Watch out creative minds all over the world - and prepare to win! BOB, the business plan competition for the life sciences will enter its next round on June 2, 2014. LISAvienna will again provide 10,000 Euros in sponsorship for the best medtech project. 

ZIT: new Calls for projects available 
Vienna-based companies have the chance to receive significant funding for strengthening their innovation efforts. 1 Million Euros are dedicated to projects for the development of knowledge-based services – e.g. in the life sciences AAL topics are encouraged. Deadline for submitting project proposals for the Service Innovations funding scheme is July 22. Later this year, ZIT will provide another 2 Million Euros for R&D projects from biotech, pharma and medtech companies (deadline Life Sciences Call: September 17)

WWTF: Vienna Research Group Call 2014 open 
Vienna is a perfect location for first-class research. Interested in relocating from abroad? WWTF wants to fund up to two new research groups in Vienna. In total, up to 1.6 Million Euros per group for six to eight years are available. Full proposals have to be submitted by July 24, 2014.
INJECT-POWER: Crowd-funding for research 
Inject-Power is a forum where scientists present their current research projects to the general public. Potential sponsors can make financial support available to projects they are interested in. All donations are paid directly into a research account and are tax-deductible. LBG, NHM and IMBA have already posted life sciences projects at this new fund-raising portal.

FFG: 3 new K-projects in the life sciences in Vienna

April 10, 2014 - K-projects shall bundle scientific competence and technological know-how and bring both to applied research projects. 11 new projects receive funding, 3 of them with partners from Vienna:
- Advancement of Dairying in Austria (ADDA) at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna 
- Decision Support for Health Policy and Planning: Methods, Models and Technologies based on existing health care data (DEXHELPP) at the Vienna University of Technology 
- Research Center of Excellence in Vascular Ageing – Tyrol (VASCage)  Â» read more

April 9, 2014 - APEPTICO, a privately held biotechnology company developing peptide drugs, announced that the phase IIa clinical study of AP301 delivered top-line results in the treatment of pulmonary permeability oedema in mechanically ventilated patients suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. » read more

April 7, 2014 - Austria celebrates its first national science slam champion: Martin Moder, molecular biologist at the University of Vienna convinced an audience of 900 people with his fruit fly performance. Hookipa Biotech wins Best Financing Deal Award in the Vaccine Industry Excellence 

March 31, 2014 - Hookipa Biotech AG, a company pioneering a new class of vaccines, is pleased to announce that it was the winner of the Best Financing Deal Award in the Vaccine Industry Excellence (ViE) Awards 2014, as part of VaccineNation and the World Vaccine Congress in Washington D.C. last week. Valneva: continuation of the phase II/III clinical trial for Pseudomonas aeruginosa vaccine candidate

March 23, 2014 - Valneva and its co-development partner Novartis decided to continue the ongoing trial. Data review of the interim analyses, further internal assessments and discussions with European regulators laid the foundation for this decision. Preliminary results are expected at the end of 2015 / early 2016. » read more

Medical University of Vienna builds up European search engine for radiology precedence cases

March 13, 2014 - As part of the EU research project KHRESMOI, a team of experts from the University Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna is building a search engine that will enable radiologists to retrieve precedence cases within seconds and thus compare the results with their current finding. It will give radiologists the ability to very quickly access a database of images and, at the same time, to view literature on specialist problems in radiology. » read more

March 3, 2014 - Ottobock is market leader in medical technology focusing on arm and leg prostheses. The company continuously invests in expanding and modernizing its Vienna site. Its microprocessor-controlled Genium knee joint won the Austrian National Design Award. Ottobock’s C-Brace orthotic system has been nominated for the Austrian National Innovation ward. Now, the Austrian Trade Commission Los Angeles awarded its US-A-Biz Award to the company for Genium X3. » read more

New PROFESSORS and PIs in the life sciences

Frederic Berger joined GMI as senior group leader. He focuses on chromatin architecture and function.Research by Armin Djamei, the new junior group leader at GMI, centers on plant pathogens and biotrophy.
MedUni Vienna notes that Martin Metzelder joined the university as new professor for children's surgery in April 2014. Furthermore, Emilio Casanova-Hevia (transgenic models in cancer research) has been appointed to a professorship at MedUni Vienna.
Richard Moriggl (translational models in cancer research) and Lukas Kenner (lab animal pathology) receive a double appointment for both MedUni Vienna and Vetmeduni Vienna.
All 3 cancer research chairs have been donated by the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft.
Marko Mihovilovic is now full professor for bioorganic synthetic chemistry at TU Vienna.
Kai Carsten Hultzsch is the new head of the Department of Chemial Catalysis at the University of Vienna.
Gunda Köllensperger is now professor of environmental chemistry at the Department of Analytical Chemistry. In addition, WWTF funded a Vienna Research Group in Cognitive Sciences for Christoph Eisenegger at the University of Vienna.
