New Resource: Multifamily Energy Financing Primer
Navigating the complex world of energy upgrade financing in multifamily housing can be daunting even for experienced BBC partners.
The Better Buildings Team responded by creating a Multifamily Energy Financing Primer, which serves as an introduction to critical issues in energy finance for the multifamily sector. It provides information on key barriers, common financing mechanisms, market data, and other resources to help leaders in the sector better understand and take advantage of innovative financing strategies.

The primer also links to multiple Implementation Models authored by BBC Multifamily partners that describe financing solutions for multifamily energy efficiency projects. The primer covers many common financing tools, including:
- Loan or debt financing
- Lease financing
- Energy savings performance contracts (or EPCs)
- Power purchase agreements
- Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE)
- On-bill financing and repayment
The Multifamily Energy Financing Primer is the newest addition to the Better Buildings Financing Navigator, an online tool that helps public and private sector organizations find financing solutions for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Since its release in December 2016, the Financing Navigator has helped thousands of users learn about financing and connect to potential lenders. In the tool, Multifamily partners answer a series of questions to navigate and identify appropriate financing options and then connect to BBC Financial Allies, a group of lenders that have committed to making financial investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy. These lenders are actively pursuing new opportunities to finance energy efficiency projects.
