BBC Multifamily Partner Newsletter
Key Announcements
  • Register for a webinar on February 16th from 2:00 - 3:00 PM EST to hear from two BBC Multifamily Sector partners, National Housing Trust and REACH CDC, on how they use third party software, WegoWise and BrightPower, respectively, for successful data collection and utility benchmarking.
  • Register for the 2017 Better Buildings Summit, scheduled for May 15-17 in Washington, DC. For more information, please check out the Summit page in the Better Buildings Solution Center or email your Account Manager.
  • It's not too late to apply for DOE's Solar in Your Community Challenge, which is a new initiative to expand solar access to low- and moderate-income households and nonprofits through $5 million in cash prizes.
  • All BBC partners commit to sharing their experiences and success with green retrofits by publishing at least one Showcase Project. To date, approximately a third of Multifamily Sector Partners have published one on the Solution Center. We are happy to work with you to complete new showcase projects throughout the year. For purposes of recognition at the Summit, we ask that you submit final drafts to us by March 1, 2017. DOE will recognize Showcase Projects completed in 2016 or the first quarter of 2017.
  • Please submit your 2016 portfolio-wide energy performance data by March 1, 2017, and include water data, if applicable. DOE will use these data to recognize your progress and accomplishments. The HUD data team will work with you to finalize your data display by April 14, 2017.
Year of Data: Update
As part of the pledge to be a BBC partner, you have committed to successfully benchmarking and reporting utility data across your portfolio. In August, we kicked off the BBC Multifamily Sector Year of Data and, although we’ve seen some progress, there is still much work to do!

Over the past several months, we’ve met with most of you to discuss the most effective strategies for your organization, whether it be receiving increased technical assistance, applying for an EDF Climate Corps Fellow, or working more closely with your third-party data provider. As we know, it’s not always easy to start this process, and so we have committed more resources to support you in meeting this commitment. Here are just a few ways we can support you:
  • Training on Portfolio Manager
  • Entering data into Portfolio Manager
  • Interfacing with utility companies
  • Reviewing data for quality control
  • Establishing sampling protocols
Also, don't forget to check out utility benchmarking resources developed for you on the HUD Exchange. If you aren’t actively working with a member of ICF's data team, please reach out to your Account Manager to begin doing so.

Partner Highlight: Tampa Housing Authority
Sr. Account Manager David Ruggiero recently traveled to train Tampa Housing Authority staff on Portfolio Manager and guide them through the initial steps of reporting utility data, including using bulk upload templates for property-level information, use details, utility meters and billing information. They met with their utility provider to discuss data sharing formats and established a procedure for future data sharing. Tampa Housing Authority will publish a full data display before the 2017 Summit and an Implementation Model describing their process. Need in-depth assistance with utility benchmarking? Talk to your Account Manager about increased support and on-site technical assistance. You can be next!

Partner Highlight: Corcoran Management
The BBC recently celebrated Multifamily partner Corcoran Management for its strides in energy efficiency at Canterbury Towers with a brief presentation followed by a building tour. Canterbury Towers was retrofitted in 2013 and has since saved $50,000 annually in avoided energy costs. BBC Multifamily Sector Lead Julia Hustwit represented HUD at the event, along with a local City Councilor, members of the community, and the press. The event was written up by the Worcester Sun and Telegram.

Key Resources
Coming soon! We're developing a more robust online guide to utility benchmarking for multifamily property owners that will review benchmarking basics, link to in-depth resources, and provide an overview of HUD policies, programs, and incentives. The guide will support all BBC Multifamily Sector partners in tracking and reaching their energy/water reduction goals, as well as aiding compliance with HUD's upcoming utility benchmarking requirements for both public and assisted housing.
