This product provides guidance on site contamination, building on the 2013 efforts of Multifamily Housing, Public and Indian Housing (PIH), and Healthy Homes. It explores the ways in which environmental review requirements at 58.5(i)(2) and 50.3(i) [“radioactive substances”] could be used both:
- to require, based on the activity type and geographic location, some minimum analysis of radon risk as part of Environmental Review (ERR) documentation, and use of mitigation including radon-resistant construction measures when necessary; and
- to find ways to encourage Responsible Entities (REs) and non-Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Part 50 HUD preparers to look for cost-effective opportunities to proactively address radon risk in existing properties that are applying for or renewing long-term HUD subsidies.
