On June 24, 2013, the federal Department of Health and Human Services announced the launch of the re-designed HealthCare.gov
The new website (and its companion 24-hour call center) provides general and state-specific information for people needing health insurance. People who are homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, non-elderly childless adults with unmet health and behavioral health needs, and others who may be currently uninsured could benefit directly from this information.
The website provides direct links to state Medicaid program application processes and coverage descriptions. In addition, it provides specific information on affordable health insurance policies that will become available through state and federal health insurance exchanges beginning October 1, 2013. The health insurance coverage options can be tailored to individual circumstances as well as to various coverage options offered within each state.
Currently, the website provides information about Medicaid and commercial health insurance options. Beginning October 1, it will also provide assistance to individuals in filing applications for coverage. This website is an extremely valuable resource for provider agencies and advocates, including HOPWA and Continuum of Care agencies, that are assisting people to gain access to health insurance.
