Water Woes: Wacky Tales of Waste and What to Do

Got tenants? Got problems with water wastage? In October, the BBC is holding two online events to help partners increase water efficiency, reduce operating costs, and ensure a reliable water supply.

We'll hear from Tabetha McCartney of Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE), whose experience with various low flow devices and toilets combined with habits of elderly tenants results in ever changing and novel issues around water consumption. Learn how JCHE identifies problems such as outdoor irrigation leaks and wasteful behavior, and what it's done to resolve problems. We'll also hear from Russ Horner of Water Management, who will advise on methods of funding water conservation projects, the importance of ongoing maintenance, and choosing equipment that fits your properties and residents' needs.

Benchmarking Water: New Approaches and Opportunities for Buildings

Tuesday, October 16, 3:00 – 4:00 PM EDT
Register for the Benchmarking Water Event.

Hear from partners that have enacted innovative water metering strategies and analytical methods that allow them to draw greater insights from their data. Additionally, find out more about a new opportunity to gain recognition from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) for benchmarking your buildings’ water and waste data.

Speakers: Rock Ridolfi Jr., Rivion; Ken Rosenfeld, BOMA International; Jonathan Bauer, The Tower Companies

More Ways to Incorporate Water into Your BBC Participation

While the BBC is primarily an energy efficiency initiative, HUD and DOE recognize that water efficiency benefits partners by reducing operating costs, ensuring a reliable water supply, and improving water quality. Additionally, because energy is required to transport and treat water, saving water also saves energy.

Add Water to Your BBC Annual Plan: Not ready to make an official water commitment, but interested in setting some water-related goals for your organization? Talk to your Account Manager about ways to integrate water into your BBC Annual Plan.

Make a Water Commitment: All BBC partners are encouraged to make a water commitment after meeting two important conditions of their energy commitment: completing a data display for the most recent calendar year and publishing at least one Showcase Project or Implementation Model. Ask your Account Manager for more details.

Access Energy and Water Efficiency Resources: There are plenty of energy and water efficiency resources available to multifamily property owners, but locating the right one can be a challenge. The BBC Multifamily sector created a library for multifamily energy and water efficiency resources on the HUD Exchange covering everything from utility benchmarking basics to financing options.
