Conference Edition                                                                                      Issue 7 October 2021

Dear Zontians,

Thank you so much for your support of our “virtual Conference”.  We have had wonderful feedback and registrations were at 301. This is many more than we would have expected at a face to face conference.  We know that there were probably more than the 301 tuned in as some clubs were able to gather together to view the sessions and so some of those attendees probably were not registered.  But of course the more the merrier and it was wonderful to see on FB, pictures of Zontians sharing fellowship.

A huge thank you to Mission Control West (Perth) and Mission Control East (Geelong) with Carole Theobald and Past Governor Jane Adornetto providing all the expertise for our Virtual Conference to run so smoothly. It was very much like ducks on a pond - mad paddling beneath the surface.  In the background, they were constantly talking to each other or messaging so that all the sessions, voting, panels and awards were delivered over the 3 days.

Carole has put the sessions on Saturday and Sunday on the D23 website so that we are able to share with members who could not attend or who missed a session or two.  Unfortunately, Friday’s session was not recorded.

The Conference Committee has done an amazing job over the last 18 months and we are so disappointed that we were not in Bendigo.  I do hope you saw the wonderful video of what the city offers and will visit once travel is again available to us. Huge thank you, Judy Gorton and Jane Adornetto (Co Conference Chairs),  Naidene Parry, Sally Thomson, Jan Buckland, Sue Clarke and Kay Stewart. The Board is planning to hold a face to face meeting in Bendigo in 2022, something this Board has not yet been able to do.

Congratulations to those who stood for leadership roles in 2022-2024 and to those who have been elected to lead the District.  You have a great team that will be ably lead by Kay Stewart. (See the elections section of this newsletter) Congratulations to Margaret Lynch and ZC Kyneton for organizing our online voting platform – all ran smoothly and to Chris Denmead and the ZC Geelong for managing the Credentials. Our business was conducted in this online format and thank you to Beryl McMillan for preparing, with her team, the changes to D23 Resolutions. The new version will appear on the website.

In this edition, you can read about the variety of speakers, panellists, topics and presentations made during the Conference and once again thank you to all who joined us to celebrate District 23’s achievements.

Our Conference has even scored a mention on ZI's 'Share your Story' - check it out!
Best Wishes,

Sandra

Response to District Advocacy Letter - Coercive Control

Minister Payne's response to District 23 Board and Clubs' letters to her regarding action on Coercive Control is attached. It has taken some months to get a response and I am not sure if clubs have received letters as well so I am sharing the letter with you all.
We will be looking to see that the current Government prepares an acceptable Strategy following the Women's Safety Summit held in early September.
As a District Board, we have supported the joint statement on the Safety Summit by the three Australian Zonta District Governors and jointly presented with the Equality Rights Alliance of which Zonta is a member.
Please note that our Advocacy Chairman, Lesley Sweetman has shared through your Area Advocacy Representatives, the documents from the Conference session she ran with Victorian Women's Trust, CEO Mary Crooks. If you do not receive them please contact Lesley or your Area Rep. They are listed in the District Directory.

2022 AMELIA EARHART (AE) FELLOWSHIP
APPLICATIONS REMINDER

Applications are due for submission by 15 November 2021

So, there is still time for clubs to liaise with local universities and their networks to promote the program and connect with potential eligible applicants. It would be wonderful to have a recipient from D23.

 WHAT IS THE FELLOWSHIP?

The Amelia Earhart (AE) Fellowship was established in 1938 in honour of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart who actively promoted the ideals of Zonta by encouraging women to take on roles in non-traditional fields.

Zonta was the only non-aviation organisation to which she belonged.
The US$10,000 AE Fellowship is awarded annually to up to 35 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences.
To be considered for the 2022 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, all applications are to be completed in English and submitted online with all materials by 15 November 2021.
Hard copy and email applications will not be accepted.

Applicants may only apply for the 2022 Amelia Earhart Fellowships using the online application form at https://zontainternational.awardspring.com/

For more background information on the Amelia Earhart Fellowship visit the Zonta International website at zonta.org/AEFellowship

CHARTER OF THE NEW GLOSSOP HIGH SCHOOL Z CLUB

The Glossup High School Z Club, sponsored by the Zonta Club of The Riverland, was officially chartered on 1st July 2021. The new club's charter ceremony was held on 6th September.

The Z club members are girls in Year 10, 11 and 12.

They have a Z Club notice Board in the main indoor learning area which the students use regularly, ensuring that other students know about the Z Club and its activities.

They have started a "Feminist Friday" music playlist at lunchtime on Fridays. While all the students are out in the yard they put on empowering songs about women, or those that were written by amazing female artists. Then girls choose the songs to go on the playlist.

In Term 1 this year the club celebrated International Women's day by having a stall at lunchtime. The girls made cupcakes to sell, set up the stall, made the posters, and wrote inspirational quotes to hand out to people who purchased a cupcake. They also invited people to write the name of a special woman in their life on a purple love heart and put it up on the glass windows to celebrate women in our lives.

In 2022 two campuses will join together so that Year 8 and 9 students can be included in the club.
