Stability Engineering is proud to be a part of the team that renovated Dad's Garage, which won the 22nd Annual Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence.
 

For this project, Stability provided engineering to convert this 12,000 sf former church building into a theater. For its new purpose, the theater was engineered to support stadium/tiered seating; roof trusses were modified to support lighting; and a new elevator shaft and pit were added. The ULI Awards for Excellence program recognizes an outstanding real estate development project or initiative that exemplifies the ULI’s mission of providing leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities. Congratulations to Dad's Garage, Pimsler Hoss Architects, and the entire team on the award for this great project.

 

Stability Engineering often provides assessment and repair services for the purposes of preserving historic properties.


Pullman Yard

Stability performed a structural evaluation and repair narrative on seven large mostly brick buildings in light of a plan to restore the buildings and landscapes to create a community heritage center to house the area’s growing artisan and urban agriculture communities. The plans include roof deck replacement, slab repairs, correction of wall settlement, and repair of damage associated with moisture exposure. Kirkwood’s Pullman Yard, an industrial site for 100 years, was originally built in 1904 as a facility to manufacture parts for sugar and fertilizer factories. In the 1920s the entire facility was purchased by the Pullman company and converted for servicing passenger rail cars until the late 1940s.


Ruff's Mill / Daniel's Mill

Stability provided assessment and repair drawings with the intent of preserving this storied grist mill structure from the 1840s. Originally owned by William Daniel, a planter and innovative agriculturalist, the mill was purchased by the Ruff family in 1855 and renamed Ruff’s Mill. The structure was spared in the Battle of Ruff`s Mill on July 4, 1864 while many others in the area were burned by Union forces. Today the mill is located on private property. Repairs will entail adding support for structural members weakened by exposure to the elements, insect damage, and poor original construction.


Capitola Mill   

Stability provided consultation and design for the rehab and adaptive re-use of this 100-year-old manufacturing warehouse. The three-story timber- and masonry-framed building was in poor condition with extensive water damage, and Stability worked alongside the contractor and developer to determine a plan for shoring the building and replacing the rotten large timber beams and columns to reinforce the framing and allow for occupiable use.
